Improving at chess is my main purpose here. If I make a few friends along the way, thats a bonus

Face-to-Face chess, OTB, only being able to apply what you have learned; thats the essence of Chess

A real project requires foresight and commitment; the hardest parts are starting and finishing

"The position you see in the diagram is like an empty canvas standing on an easel. If you have any aptitude, talent or, no less important, desire, then boldly take up your brush and paints, decide upon the necessary color and embark upon your creative work. But how should one begin? I cannot say what feelings artists experience at that moment, but, whenever I have to start a game with an 'empty' chess board in front of me, I cannot stop thinking that today, right now, I have the very fortunate possibility of playing the most beautiful, the most fighting, and the most profound game since the time of my birth and since long before it" ~ David Bronstein

The link is just one tiny little part of one incredible site, Sarah's Journal.

The right hand side column, in yellow, has a number of links to fascinating chess stories. The link on the very top is the one You now have, on P.Morphy.

The page in its entirety is immense, and, as Sarah says, is a History of Chess and Chess Culture. Sarah hasn't been around in a while now, but was for years a regular kibitzer/contributor on P.Morphy's player's page.

Patriot: Hi <morf>! Have you read Dan's latest Novice Nook (http://www.chesscafe.com/text/heism...)? It's funny that I was reading it the other day and recognized the first position. He gave that position to me some time ago during a lesson and asked what I would play. On the third page or so (bottom paragraph) where he starts out "As an experiment..." he talks about how one of his 'better students' analyzed it. Later he quotes what the student said and I thought, "Wait a minute! That's what I said!" It was funny. His answer to the way I analyzed it was very interesting.

Today's problem reminded me of what he said in the Novice Nook, http://www.chesscafe.com/text/heism.... And if you read my review post on today's puzzle you will see what I mean.

Take care!

Jun-24-12  MarkFinan: Hi Morf :)...

Well Im just getting ready for the pub to go see tonights game, so I'll make some moves In our games tommorow as I don't want to rush and mess something up, and I haven't even looked for 2 days mate.. Sorry buddy, I'm not being Ignorant, or I'm trying not to be, so I apologise If I appear to have been, but I'm totally shattered this week, and even though I feel tired........ I can't miss the game lol.

My adrenaline will keep me awake, I'm getting really excited now :)

So I hope you watch and cheer us on Morf, and remember your English pal will be either extremely happy, or crying Into his pint tonight!! I swear I'll never eat pasta again If we lose, and I kinda need that stuff now I'm going to the gym a few times a week haha..

On the downside, we do have Idiots over here who are so Ignorant and thick, that all the Pizza places, Italian restaurants etc...etc... Will probably get trashed If we lose tonight! Thats just my opinion and prediction, because even I admit a tiny minority of our fans let us down and give us a bad reputation!

Don't get me wrong, I don't want Pavarotti knocking on my door with a free pizza tonight either way, but I'm certainly not down with the hooligans.. Their all fat, bald, middle aged drunks that fight In groups, and I hope they all get locked up If they kick off tonight.. Iv'e never understood people who commit crimes that don't make money, let alone cost them money!!!!

COME ON ENG-ER-LAND :)

My prediction.. My heart says a 2-0 win In our favour, my head says a 1-1 draw, and no doubt a loss on penaltys! The less I expect, the better we've done........ So we'll lose, lol. Peace out for now Morf, I may not show my face for a week after tonight haha..

Jun-25-12  MarkFinan: Well 23 million watched the game In England on TV last night Morf !! Out of curiosity, how many Americans watch the Superbowl, In comparison with your population ? I'm guessing thats your biggest sporting event??

Anyway I guess I can't complain, we Just were'nt and arne't good enough.. The Germans would have thrashed us had we gone through anyway, so Its a blessing In disguise that we lost! I hate losing to the Germans because we do It that often lol.. I'm wanting Spain to win The Euro's now, just anyone but the Germans..... Sorry, I know you like them, but all my life we've been getting beaten by them, so Viva Espania lol..

Iv'e just got to nip out but I'll defo get a few moves In shortly.. Thanks for your patience Morf, you're a gentleman :)

Jun-26-12  MarkFinan: Game #1 <39...Rxh2>

Game #2 <32...Nf6>

sevenseaman: <morf> For the sake of accuracy, there is some hair-splitting over your sol. to #35609.

Your Sol.

<1...Ra1+ 2.Kb2 Rhb1+ 3.Kc3 Na4+ 4.bxa4 Ra3+ 5.Kc4 Rxb4 mate>

Computer Sol.

1...Ra1+ 2. Kb2 Na4+ 3. bxa4 Rhb1+ 4. Kc3 Ra3+ 5. Kc4 Rxb4#

It seems 2...Rhb1+(rather than 3...Rhb1) allows the K to escape via d3 that 2...Na4+ line does not. Please set up a board if necessary & reconcile the 2 lines.

Jun-27-12  MarkFinan: G#1 <40...kf8> draw??

Hi Morf... Well the end of the Euro's are In sight so Things are getting back to normal for me, hope you're well mate.. And yeh, post any PM analysis In my forum and I'll go through It and give you my opinions and thoughts :)

Jun-28-12  Limpin Kt: Thats a very witty and amusing story posted on sevenseaman's forum. :) i liked it very much. Seems like you can make a fortune as writer. :)

Patriot: Hello <morf>! I agree--Dan really makes excellent points. Even if I think my logic is infallible in some way, Dan always puts things into perspective and proves me wrong. Sometimes I get it right though, LOL.

This last tournament, I won all three games. The players were rated ~1400, ~1650, and ~1780. I gained 50 rated points putting me close to 1750. I was well into Class A but took a fall after a consistent increase from 1300 to 1860--never deviating more than 50 points. Dan said he never saw a student go up that many points without deviating more than 50 points. But he told me that every student falls back at some point and is normal.

morfishine: <Limpin Kt> I am glad you enjoyed that little story!

I hope all is going well with your studies. I am much impressed with your problem solving. <sevenseaman> has taught me there is a difference between 'solving' and 'playing'. Its been a difficult process for me to improve at solving since I've been primarily a player. Granted its all chess, but there is a distinct difference. Good show!

sevenseaman: The Germans blew it big time. Buffon's captaincy is beginning to win me over as a fan.
Jun-29-12  Limpin Kt: I'm very glad that you appreciate my problem solving, but i too like to play chess rather that solving,- just like you! :) but i kinda dislike sharp tactics in games- i play safely and positionally. By the way i looked into those fischer sic games to posted. They were nice, but most of the tactics went right above my head! :)

sevenseaman: The Germans promised to deceive. Italians may have their number but their win was down to the brilliance of Balotelli.

The man has an incredible positional sense. In the right place both the times.

Balotelli on the ball! His physicality compares with that of a rhino; no defender will make a scratch on the pachyderm.

You are right. In chess play is the real deal. Puzzles are like taking your knife to the grindstone, once in a while. That too may not guarantee anything, like the English practicing their penalty shooting.

Jun-29-12  LoveThatJoker: <morf> Hi! I'm glad you enjoyed it, man! I went through the game and once I understood the profundity of the combination, I just knew that you would dig it!

:)

I don't have Chrenev's "1000 Best Short Games of Chess", although maybe at some point I did. But in the context of what I'm reading right now, I'm almost done "Kramnik: My Life and Games", so I'm excited about that! It's been a great book.

(I was studying "Petrosian vs The Elite" and "Kramnik: My Life and Games" at the same time).

PS. It's the holiday weekend in my part of the world. So I will be back on Wednesday, July 4th!

Jul-01-12  MarkFinan: Hi Morf... My apologies for the long delay, Iv'e been too caught up In football and personal things, so when Iv'e nipped In here I haven't even mentioned chess or looked at our games either.. Sorry mate, I'm fully focused once more :)

Game #1 <41...Rd4?>

Game #2 <33...Ng4>

Jul-01-12  MarkFinan: Hi Morf..... You do realise you could have played Rb8+ - Rb7+ - R/Bxf7 and gone a pawn up In the endgame?? I highly doubt I could have promoted my passed pawn, but please let me know If Iv'e missed something here mate, because I really did agonise For an hour once I'd played kf8, and thought It a little cheeky me offering you a draw??

I really feel Iv'e dodged a bullet here buddy, so have I missed something?

I'll look at your game you posted at mine soon, and we'll have a good PM on this drawn game too :)

Game #1 <34...Qxg4>

Enjoy the match tonight mate, pity It Isn't an England Germany battle though lol... We just aren't good enough, I said It before the tournament, and I say It even more now! Get rid of Rooney, he does nothing at major tourneys for his country, although he's not bad at helping us beat Moldova, Azerbaijan and Albania to reach them!!!! Gerrard was Immense as usual though..
I'm gonna say 2-1 Spain, and keep your eye on an Italian player called Pirlo, Morf, he's 34 yrs old and outstanding! Player Of the Euro's IMO.. I'm turning my phone off, closing the curtains, 6 pack, and vegging out on the sofa lol... No crazy £5 a pint prices for me In the pub unless England are playing!

Oh yeh, I was meaning to tell you, that In 1966 when we won the world cup, 32.2 million people watched!!! Thats amazing, given our population size and lack of TV sets back then lol

spk soon mate :)

Jul-02-12  MarkFinan: Hi Morf... Are you positive you want to resign our last game, Its far from lost mate!

I understand If you've kind of lost Interest, as I haven't paid much attention the last 2 wks, and for that I do apologise, but I'm football mad, I can't help It!! I'm sorry If Iv'e come across as a bit Ignorant, I never Intended to, and I still had both our remaining games set up on my boards, i haven't even played a game In 2 weeks!

Well you gave me 3 good games there anyway, and I really don't think I'd beat you In a 15 or 30 min game, (we have to arrange a game soon?) It's just with the luxury of time I'd play anyone upto 2250 and feel pretty confident..

All the best anyway Morf :)

Jul-02-12  MarkFinan: Hi Morf, Iv'e just noticed your post at mine, and I'm glad you reconsidered :)..

I'll try get a few moves In with you tonight before I sleep mate, take It at whatever pace you like..

Game#1 <42...e4>

Game#2 <36...Rd4>

Jul-04-12  LoveThatJoker: <morf> Thanks for your note, man! I'll definitely look up Chernev's book. I can see myself doing so this weekend.

I hope that things are going great for you, and happy 4th of July!
