 | | Patriot: <morf>, Thank you for all the encouragement! You are absolutely right. I had my lesson and Dan had me do something completely different--play the computer. He wanted to see first-hand how my time management is (especially on the first 15 moves). He goes by "Botvinnik's rule" which suggests spending no more than 20% of your total time on the first 15 moves. He said I had no problem with that. I played the game out and he commented on some of my moves afterward without giving me any clues as to what should be done. Anyway I beat the computer and proved some worth. :-) By the way, here's a VERY good blog by Dan which explains thought process very well. I analyzed it precisely the way he did and concluded the same thing--no more and no less. I only analyzed just enough to prove my move was best and looked at the strong replies. I've never seen any authors write anything this practical on analysis. Let me know what you think. http://www.chess.com/article/view/s... |

| Aug-25-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <morf> If you have time and are so inclined, check out this game that I just played against Computer 7 in <CG>'s new Playing Zone. (It was a 3 minute per side game). We should meet for some games there, dude: Chessgames Playing Zone LTJ

 | | Patriot: Good morning <morf>! It sounds like you gave those 2000+ players a run for their money! Good job! I was nearly beaten recently by someone rated 800 points below me, only because of a risk I took. But usually that kind of difference is crazy. I do have a rating goal in mind (and paying for lessons) so I don't like getting paired against anyone that low. When you average that in with high rated players during a tournament, if you don't make a perfect score then you are losing rating points! Besides rating points, it doesn't help anyone. I don't learn anything from the game and they are only getting dehumanized. The same thing would occur if I played someone much higher than me. But when you are dealing with a small club, there's no choice but to deal with those kinds of pairings sometimes. |
 |
| Aug-26-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <morf> Thanks, man! Yeah I just felt the combination and went for it. 1) Yes. It worked out for the best!
2) That's an alternative for sure, morf. Knowing me, I would have gone in for 19. Qh3 Nb4 20. Nf1 3) Totally! 24...Qg5? is definitely deserving of a question mark. LTJ |

 | | Patriot: <morf> <BTW: Your postings at the POTD has been very consistent and accurate. I've been having some problems but I think its due to an approach change. Before, I would try to solve just by visualization, then test my line on a real board. Now, I try to solve, check, bust, re-check before using a real board. There is a big difference even though all I am doing is being more thorough and going deeper without the board.> Thanks! I'm not sure if I'm getting better or the problems are getting easier. Yes I think it's important to do everything you would otherwise have to do OTB. After you settled on a move, I see no problem testing it on a board to see if you missed anything. That may be better than immediately resorting to an engine afterward, which is what I usually do. Changing one's approach can mess with you until you become accustomed to that approach. Hopefully that means I'm due for some major improvements! :-) |

PS. Thanks for the compliment on the Daily Puzzle. I'm particularly proud of having found a win on the line I chose for Thursday; as it was one of those technical grind lines. Thankfully with crafty on chessvideos.tv, I was able do so! PPS. Whenever we can, we'll play. No pressure. |
 |
| Aug-27-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <morf> Just want to add one thing in regards to the <PS.> note that I wrote you. Obviously when I said that "thankfully with crafty on chessvideos.tv, I was able to do so!", I was referring to the fact that I was able to do so <against> crafty. It was a really instructive exercise for me to duke it out with crafty, improve on my technical skills, and prove that through human calculation the position I labelled as winning to start off with, is indeed so! | | Patriot: Good morning! I remember watching Hee-Haw sometimes as a kid. There was some really funny stuff on there. It sounds like you are on target with setting 20 minutes max. I know what you mean about taking the position in. I didn't even realize black was up a piece for a few pawns on yesterday's POTD. Ironically this didn't affect my decision to play ...Qxe3+. Many times material imbalances don't change the best move, but not always. <I think this will be a valuable approach. For example, have you ever gotten a little nervous in an OTB game when you've sat on a move for 15 or 20 minutes?> Oh yes! 8 minutes makes me nervous in G/30 but I'm certain I've taken 15 or 20 in G/60 before. After a while the cost-benefit goes way down. On a slightly different note, I'm positive one of the issues I've had with playing too slow comes from spending way too much time looking at my opponent's threats. I'm of the opinion one should be aware but not go into full analysis mode. That is a huge waste of time producing nothing. That time is much needed in finding a good move. |
 |
| Aug-27-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <morf> Thanks for the game that you sent me! You played really well in that game - inspired!
18...a4! is a stand-out move.
I also really found 6...c6 to be instructive. I would have just jumped right in with 6...c5, but then I realized that 7. Nb5 has not been prevented. 6...c6 is a great moment in the game also. Two miscellaneous notes:
1) 20...Nxc3 is precise, man! Good stuff!
2) 23...Qe5+ was better.
Thanks for sending me this. I really found your game to be instructive and I enjoyed going through it! LTJ
PS. Thanks for Morphy vs Maurian, 1855. Morphy gets "Morphyed" is a proper description for it! |
 |
| Aug-27-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <morf> Two notes regarding your game: 1) I was actually indeed referring to 20...Nxc3. It is the only move, but that is precisely my point - it is the only move and it requires precision; and you were precise in that instance. Good stuff! 2) 23...Qe5+ forces mate. So when I saw your 20...Qa5, I wondered why didn't you go for that or at least 20...Rf2+. But yeah now that I look more closely at the finish associated with 23...Qa5, I see where it is something in that you missed 24...Qc3#. LTJ |

 | | Patriot: <morf>, I haven't said anything about this to Dan. It could very well be one of my issues. I think he talks about this in an earlier Novice Nook though. Here's an observation: Compared to where my rating used to be (~1850), my tactical rating on CTS is no different and my blitz rating (2 min 5 sec inc) is no different, but my USCF rating is down close to 1700. Theoretically there shouldn't be anything different about my game, although it could still depend on a number of things like move by move choices, confidence, time management, etc. |
 |
Aug-28-12
 | | Patriot: Good morning, <morf>. Thanks. I ran it by Dan and here's what he said: <There's a big difference between looking for threats and analyzing them. After my opponent moves, I spend a few seconds looking at all the new things he can do but I don't usually analyze any of them unless I am planning a candidate move that might allow them. Then it becomes very important whether the threat will beat my candidate move. So the total time before I start considering my candidate moves is very short.Listen to my "out-loud" videos on the ICC where I play against the computer to see how I do this in practice.> This gives me a confidence boost. Tonight I'll be playing 1 or 2 rounds of an ongoing tournament so we will see how it goes. |
 |
| Aug-29-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <morf> It does, man! I have yet to look at the game from the Atlantic Open precisely because I have to "improv" a pgn for it. I'll probably be able to do so by tomorrow at the latest, so I will get back to you on that. LTJ
PS. Check this cool game out, Z Almasi vs Bareev, 1997. |
 |
Aug-29-12
 | | Patriot: Good morning <morf>! Well I won my game last night. He's rated ~1650 and I found myself being extremely cautious after he lost a piece. Because you have a lot to lose when winning, Dan suggests thinking defense first (not thinking defensively)--avoiding counterplay. Of course you don't want to beat yourself on time either and I did find that time was becoming a factor. For a long time I avoided snapping off a knight because it would open things up for his other bishop. As we both approached 1 minute remaining, I made the decision to do so even without being completely sure. We blitzed out the rest and he dropped a piece and resigned. |
 |
| Aug-30-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <morf> Thanks for the tip on the pgn viewer. I thought I had to build a normal pgn for the USCF game (with the brackets and quotation marks at the top) but thankfully, as per your correct advice, I was able to input solely the text you posted on my forum and it worked perfectly! That game possesses some really neat and powerful tactical ideas. The ending is simply exquisite and instructive - Thanks for having sent that one over! As it relates to the game that you played on ChessCube, all I have to say is wow! Something right out of WC Kasparov! Everything you played from 24...Rxe3+!! onwards is just awesome, morf! Congratulations on that performance! LTJ
PS. I had Stockfish analyze some key ideas from Z Almasi vs Bareev, 1997. I'm going to post them on the game kibitz and send you the pgn soon! |

| Aug-31-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <morf> Hi, man! Hey look, I just realized that the reason why the pgn that I posted on your forum is not working for you on the ChessTempo viewer is because <CG> "eats" the {} brackets whenever you post something on here. Send me your e-mail and I will send you the pgn via e-mail, so that way you can actually view it on the ChessTempo PGN viewer. I look forward to your e-mail: lovethatjokerchess@yahoo.com LTJ
PS. As it relates to 12...Nxd4 13. cxd5 Nxe2+ 14. Qxe2 0-0-0, Stockfish gives 15. Ng5 when White has a < > advantage. PPS. Kindly delete the long post here on your forum with the pgn I sent you, man, as it is useless - once again, due to the fact that CG "eats" the {} brackets! |

| Aug-31-12 | | LoveThatJoker: <morf> I sent you the pgn and I guarantee it is working fine. I recommned that you go through the game via the pgn viewer, so that way you can actually see what the '$14' stuff is all about and so that going through the game will be a pleasant and fast experience for you. If you go through it by hand (i.e., without the pgn viewer), it will take you too much time, man! LTJ |

 | | Patriot: Hello <morf>! It was G/45, but apparently I played "afraid" even though I was up a piece. I tried too hard to prevent counter-play, probably caused from paranoia of bad play. <You always get me squirming in my chair when you mention "Well, we were down to about a minute..."> LOL...Well I was starting to squirm a bit but thankfully kept my cool pretty good because of playing blitz. I do think the "find" recently about not analyzing my opponent's threats (just recognizing them) is starting to be beneficial--it seems to be helping my blitz play. I think it should be easier to find aggressive/good moves, as long as I avoid the problem mentioned above. It will at least give me a longer candidate search time which translates to stronger play. I'll definitely take a look at your game (probably tomorrow) and let you know what I think. Here's a 2 minute game (+5 sec increment) (I was white): 1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3.
