 | | refutor: in my memory (which admittedly is fallible) i had never seen 1.e4 c6 2.Nf3 d5 3.e5 Bf5 (hoping for d4) 4.Nd4 before (I was Black). i checked the opening explorer and lo and behold, the great Bronstein has played this before Bronstein vs A Redolfi, 1960 |

| Sep-04-07 | | square dance: modern chess strategy by ludek pachman has a chapter on the minority attack. you can probably find the book on amazon for fairly cheap. i know its not exactly an entire book, but its a good start. :-) |

 | | refutor: going back into tournament play this weekend wish me luck... theory question for when i get back
1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6 5.e3 Nbd7 6.Bd3 dxc4 7.Bxc4 c5?! doesn't this transpose into a QGA? i guess the issue is developing the knight to d7...at the very least i would think this would be playable... i'm always looking to avoid the Meran if i can help it ;) |

 | | refutor: can somebody recommend a good tromp line v.
1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 e6
normally i had played 3.e4 and if 3. ...Be7 4.Nc3 hoping for 4. ...d5 going into a tromp but at the tournament on the weekend 4. ...Nxe4 was sprung on me with 5.Bxe7 Nxc3 6.Bxd8 Nxd1 7.Bxc7 Nxb2 etc and although Fritz said we had equality, he had the pawn. click for larger viewanything better? i see that Hodgson has tried 3.Nf3 and he's "the guy" when it comes to the Tromp. Am I missing anything obvious if i play 3.c4 and go for the Seirawan attack? click for larger viewseems highly transpositional |

 | | refutor: No problem
ICCF is cool...they have "friendly" matches between countries, I am currently representing my country for the first time, on Board 26 for Canada v. Finland...working my way up to board one |

 | | Open Defence: cool!! all the best!! maybe we will meet in the near future in such a match :) |

 | | refutor: re : clues
i'm done for today, have to get something done
my idea was between 3:47 and 4:32 is 45 minutes/seconds. the only country with a 45 minute time zone is nepal? i tried all the nepal chess players i could fine but maybe someone else wants to "take up the torch". if this helps, be sure to come back and thank me :) |

 | | refutor: re : clues
one other thought i had was that "from 3:47 to 4:32" could be postal notation. unfortunately "47" is d7 and "32" is c2. but it's something else to think about |

| Mar-02-08 | | chessmoron: His July 25th film, Step Brother may be funnier than Semi-Pro. |
 |
Mar-02-08
 | | refutor: have you seen semi-pro yet? |
 |
| Mar-02-08 | | chessmoron: Yes. A typical, almost routine Will Ferrell character. |
 |
| Mar-08-08 | | Knight13: We should still respect refutor because he's one of the oldest members of Chessgames.com and has seen a lot. |

 | | KingG: <refutor> Maybe another important game for your collection Game Collection: D44!: V Mikhalevski vs I Karim, 2008. White tried to improve on Topalov vs Kramnik, 1996 with 29.a4, but still only gets a draw. |

 | | refutor: has anyone tried to run chessbase 8 on vista? |
 |
Jul-05-08
 | | refutor: as sad as it sounds this game Ponomariov vs Gelfand, 2008 has reinforced my confidence to play 1.e4 and not be worried about the petroff (despite the fact that there's improvements for Black all over the place). thank you ruslan :) |
 |
Jul-06-08
 | | micartouse: <refutor> It does look like a pretty cool line to try. White gets easy development, opposite side castling, and just runs the h-pawn up the board and the pros seem happy with this. He invites Black to disrupt his pawns even more though on f3, so I guess you have to be really careful about endgames. |
 |
Jul-06-08
 | | refutor: <the pros seem happy with this> of course they do! they turn the petroff into the open sicilian basically (Be3, Qd2, O-O-O and storm the kingside with pawns) |
