I'll work as many as I can and enjoy the solutions of the one's I don't get to.> Whenever I come across a good puzzle, I have you in mind when I print it. So, in so far as the puzzles go its more your forum than mine. You know that. You sound as though you misunderstood me. Make a suggestion, why apologize. Even constraints and compulsions can be altered. I could post them in 'Booked Up'. I used to post them all there, you remember? (may be a few in Patriot's forum) Perhaps in view of the traffic there, I thought it was <your> decision to keep the puzzles in 'A Close Call' as soon it came up (less than 4 months ago). <Its been a tough week>. I know about that. As well as about your time constraints. Still I wish you could do all the puzzles I select for you. Just say how we need to re-format; we have been doing them for over two years now. If your interest flags these will naturally dry off, I am afraid. |

 | | morfishine: <sevenseaman> Very Good! I'll do my best! sol 60374 <1...Bg4> (Threatening 2...Bxf3 mate) puts white on the permanent defensive; I went thru a couple of lines, ending with White an exchange then a piece down. If White accepts the Bishop: <1...Bg4 2.fxg4 Bxb7 3.Qd3 Rxg4 4.Bxe5 f3 5.Nc3 Qb2 6.Qf1 Qg2+ 7.Qxg2 fxg2+ 8.Kg1 Bf2+ 9.Kxf2 g1=Q+> and Black wins ***
sol 91796 POTM <1.Bh7+> and White wins: (1) If 1...Kxh7 2.Qg6+ and mate next move
(2) If 1...Kh8 2.Rf8+ Kxh7 3.Qg6 mate
***
sol 79514 <1...Ka8> (Black loses with 1...Bxd7??? 2.Rf8+ Bc8 3.Rxc8+ Kxc8 4.Qe8 mate)...But now, white can't stop both mate at <g2> or the attack against <g1>: <2.Qc2 Qg1+ 3.Rxg1 hxg1=Q mate> Powerful stuff! |

Jun-16-12
 | | sevenseaman: #60374 Once you found the key move, its the end. 1. Bg4 fxg4 2. Qxd7 1-0. All 3 are excellent thinking products. |

 | | morfishine: Good evening <sevenseaman>! I hope you have enjoyed the football as much as I have...Of course the games will get tighter and better as we move along sol 76238 <1.Bxg5+ Kxg5 2.h4+ Kh6 3.g5 mate> Smooth, I like it sol 63992 <1.Rb6 f6 2.Rxb7 Rc7 3.Rxc7 Qxc7 4.Qxf8 mate> There is something charming about this puzzle, perhaps its the impudence of the white rook :) sol 90991 <1.Bh6> Must win: (1) 1...f6 2.Qc6 Be5 3.Qe6+ Kh8 5.Rxe5 Qd1+ 6.Kh2 fxe5 7.Qxe5+ Kg8 8.Qg7 mate The football matches were quite good, though low scoring. The quality seemed to be very high with the exception of all those late yellow flags... |

 | | sevenseaman: #s 76238 & 63992. I enjoyed reading your fine sols and exultant comments. Solving 63992 is exceptionally pleasing. You sadly missed #90991. You too must have felt it in your bones. Had you got it you'd have exploded with joy. Here's the cheeky solution. Its very rare, to be sure. 1. Bc3 (clears Q's path to Qg5+ and gathering the d8 R)
1...Be3 (the counter punch) 2. Bxd5 (the counter to the counter) 2...Bxc1 3. Bxb3 1-0, if you count the casualties. Don't you think that along with #63992, its a TOP puzzle? I did think I could have left off the sol for a while longer but I know of your time constraints. If you got everything in this post just say 'delete' and I'll delete the sol to #90991 to enable <LK> to have a fair try (in case he still hasn't seen the sol). You can still give general reaction. I recently toggled for harder puzzles and so they are likely to be most of the time. I enjoy them much more and my concentration is nearly unshakable. You'll perhaps see now why my success rate with Saturday/Sunday POTDs is better. You can scour a couple of pages and you may find some untried puzzles. These are all good ones. A great show <morf> and I never appreciate you saying this aint your page! |

| Jun-17-12 | | Limpin Kt: <63992> the idea is simple but the right follow up was so difficult i almost concluded i couldn't do it. I was thinking along the lines <1.R*a6 f6 2.Re6 Qg7 3.Q*g7 k*g7 4.Rb1> although this <positional> line offers white superior chances because of passer a pawn as black's b pawn falls as its attacked twice, black's counterplay on c file shouldn't be neglected. I stared at the board for long long looong time and then the correct line clicked in my head. <<<1.Rb6!! f6 2.Rb7>>> and black is lost. |
 |
| Jun-17-12 | | Limpin Kt: Sorry, print mistake. The positional line should read 1.R*a6 etc to 4.Ra7 |
 |
| Jun-17-12 | | Limpin Kt: <76238> 1.Bg5 kg5 2.h4 kh6 3.g5mate 1min |
 |
| Jun-17-12 | | Limpin Kt: <90991> funny, exactly same combination occured in one of my games some 3 years ago. I was playing black then and i had sacrificed by bishop on g2 to open the g file. <1.Bc3 Bc3 2.Qg5 kf8 3.Qd8> winning. |

 | | morfishine: <sevenseanan> Yes, those were three excellent puzzles, real "doozies"! I would say keep things as they are; You can always post the sol in my forum so others won't see Yes, there are some morsels I haven't gotten to: mustn't be a glutton, Its one of the seven deadly sins! Admittedly, I've munched on 55167 a bit, but my appetite isn't satisfied sol 87870 <1.Qxg6+ Kxg6 2.R1f6+ Kh5 3.Rf5+ Kg6 4.R7f6+ Kg7 5.Rg5+ Kh7 6.Bf5 mate> I think its close, but I must be missing a better move for Black since its a mate in 7 BTW: My book "The Life and Games of Michail Tal" has arrived. Speaking of doozies, this one's a real doozy! Written in interview style, one warms up to Tal immediately as he recalls his journey to the top...lots of funny parts. Besides the great annotated games, one gets a wonderful glimpse into the human side of Tal :) |

 | | sevenseaman: <LK> <LK> #90991 you missed it. The sol is right there in my post addressed to <morf> just above your 4 sol posts. See it for yourself. The other 2 are fine. Super inspiration in #63992. Genius confirmed. |
