 | | sevenseaman: Hi <morf> Sword fight is superb. See the sol at its end after you've relished a try or two. Nice seeing you jump back into the sea; there are pearls down under. BTW Great Olympic performance! A wake up call for planners! Its a determined revival of old glory. Rio will be even better, hope I live. <sol 61357 <1.Bd2+ K-any 2.Rg5#>> Nailed.
<sol 61744 <1.Nd2 Rf7 2.Nc4> and Black Queen loses communication with <d8>. As a matter of fact, I can't think of a good response to <1.Nd2>. If 1...Ke7 2.Nc4 crushes> As good as nailed. Just to do away with the problem's ambiguity; 1. Nd2 Ke7 2. Rc6 Qxc6 3. Qxc6 <sol 92479 <1.h6> winsIf <1...Rh5+ 2.Rh4> and if <1...Rxa5 2.h7 Ra8 3.Rg8> or <1...Rxa5 2.h7 Rh5+ 3.Rh4>> Masterly. | | morfishine: Morning <sevenseaman>! Boy, I was happy to finally solve 61744. I spent way too much time on other lines when the 'outlandish' backward step of the Knight brings on the collapse of Black's position. Very pleasing how helpless the Black pieces look, almost as if they are staring wide-eyed, like the old 'deer in the headlights' as doom approaches |

| Aug-17-12 | | Limpin Kt: Hi <morf> :) i'm really glad to read your msg :) many a times a have thought i will leave a message at your forum, but i know you are really a busy man and your forum already has so many visitors leaving their message :) i have been playing chess recently in my newly bought computer. I hope you have played against chessmaster grandmaster edition- its quite tough to beat, so much so that i'm thinking of wholly changing my opening rep! :) the computers unlike humans become extremely powerful in endgame (or it might be that without any proper training of the game i have some big gaping holes in my endgame knowledge), i have many a times dropped a win and settled for a draw in endgames. By the way do you play chess regularly against computers? |
 |
| Aug-17-12 | | Limpin Kt: Hey <sevenseaman> no kidding! Do You really assume your rating is about 1.4k? Let me enlighten you then! :) the problems you post are really tough and are well about 2k- i might estimate your rating as 2.2-2.3k. And yep, i had to restrain myself a lot to save that amount, but its alright with me :) no pain no gain!. By the way i stil don't have net connection to my laptop, the rental is quite costly, so i'm logging in thro' my cell only. |

 | | sevenseaman: I am happy you enjoyed doing 61774. First move is a snorter. Before it gets buried under the sands of time I want you to have a good look at #70771 on page 43. Its a one trick pony but boy, what a trick! |

Aug-17-12
 | | sevenseaman: <LK> I am not kidding. Solving problems is a different kind of rating. You are concentrating for a mere 2 to 10 minutes. Playing a long game is the true test. I recall I recommended #70771 to you too (p.43). |

| Aug-17-12 | | Limpin Kt: <72711> it seems to be 1.Ne8! Kc8 2.Nd6! Wins |

 | | sevenseaman: < Limpin Kt: <72711> it seems to be 1.Ne8! Kc8 2.Nd6! Wins> It does. So does 1. Ne8+ Qe7 2. Qc7+ Kxe8 3. Qxe7#. First move is the masterly thought. Explore the ISP market thoroughly. You should be able to find one for about Rs.300 t0 Rs.500 pm service. I use BSNL. With the concessions they give me as an ex-serviceman oldie I pay less than Rs.1000 pm. |

| Aug-17-12 | | Limpin Kt: Hey <7cm> just saw the puzzle you recommended- seems like there is obvious combi move- 1...Bb5! And black wins mainly due to blockading action on b file. Is it? |

 | | sevenseaman: #36342 Test your rating (1880.4)
Very classy. I was unhappy to miss it. What is worse, I did not feel I could have got it in a hurry. So spend good time on your plan; 15 min. will not be too much vs my paltry 1:06 min. click for larger viewWhite. |

 | | sevenseaman: <LK> <1...Bb5! And black wins mainly due to blockading action on b file. Is it?> I am fairly certain you meant 1...Bb4. Good. You can test your rating on #36342. You should get it. |

 | | morfishine: Yes, of course <sevenseaman> Good ole 70771. I put it in my pending file, but where's my pending file? Oh dear, I pride myself on organization, but when I lose my organizer, I'm in big trouble! And what a finish for 70771!...After <1...Bb4> I'm having a hard time finding a decent move for White: (a) 2.Bxb4 b2 and the pawn Queens
(b) 2.Bb2 <2...c3> 3.Bxc3 Bxc3 and the only way for White to stop the pawn from Queening is to give up another piece: <4.cxb3 Bxe1> The sad part here for White, despite being 2-pieces down (for 2-pawns), Black immediately begins to rip apart White's K-side pawns: <5.b4 Bxg3 6.b5 Bxh4 7.b6 Bd8 8.b7 Rb8 9.Ra8 Bc7> and Black Wins (c) 2.Bb2 Bxe1 winning a piece and the game. If White tries to liquidate pawns with 3.cxb3 Black has the rude 3...c3 4.Bc1 Bxg3 Now, onto the others and where is my pending file? |

 | | morfishine: Afternoon <sevenseaman>! Lets see if I can catch up a little on that pending file. First, some new ones: sol 48353 <1.Rxe7+ Kxe7 2.Bb6> and the Black Queen is lost (It was important to play 1.Rxe7+ first as an immediate 1.Bb6 is rebuffed by 1...Bc5+) sol 58380 <1.Qf6+ Bxf6 2.Rg3+ Qg4 3.Rxg4+ Bg5 4.Rxg5#> Now, from the pending file:
sol 49065 <1...Nh4+ 2.Kf2 Bg3+ 3.Kxg3 4.Qf4#> Now, if that isn't positively gorgeous, I don't know what isn't Thats it for now, Have a great weekend! :) |

 | | sevenseaman: Hi <morf> Good morning. <sol 48353 <1.Rxe7+ Kxe7 2.Bb6> and the Black Queen is lost (It was important to play 1.Rxe7+ first as an immediate 1.Bb6 is rebuffed by 1...Bc5+)> Nice. You have auto-answered my question as well.
<sol 58380 <1.Qf6+ Bxf6 2.Rg3+ Qg4 3.Rxg4+ Bg5 4.Rxg5#>> At times your perspicacity leaves me dumbfounded.
Now, from the pending file:
<sol 49065 <1...Nh4+ 2.Kf2 Bg3+ 3.Kxg3 4.Qf4#> Now, if that isn't positively gorgeous, I don't know what is>n't Great! Gorgeous is your knife-edge insight. Make no mistake it wasn't an ordinary problem. (But I assure you all in this list are outstanding. There never is anything retrograde in sharing any difficulty encountered) |

 | | morfishine: Afternoon <sevenseaman> Nice write-up and solution in the POTD today, especially your mention of 'Danner's Spanners'! Very clever, yet very true Black's improvement <20...d5> |

Aug-19-12
 | | morfishine: Ok <sevenseaman> lets see if we can clean up some of this back log: sol 62811 <1...Rg4+ 2.Kh3 Nd5> and White has no adequate defense to <3...Nf4+> sol 57894 (not 75894: I was looking all over for this) <1...Nd4 2.Qd3 Nxf3+ 3.Qxf3 Bxe4>...so simple once you see it sol 64022 <1...Bg1 2.Rg2 Qxg2+ 3.Qxg2 Rxg2 4.Kxg2 Bxe3> and Black wins sol 79588 <1.Rxg6 hxg6 2.Qg7+ Ke8 3.Bf6> and Black is lost since mate is threatened at <e7> and the Bishop covers <h4> preventing any Black checks (also, the Black King is prevented from running away to <d8>) I'm exhausted, but its a pleasant exhaustion. Have a great week <sevenseaman>! |

 | | sevenseaman: <sol 62811 <1...Rg4+ 2.Kh3 Nd5> and White has no adequate defense to <3...Nf4+>> Correct. He sacs his R at c4 but that is only spite.
<sol 57894 (not 75894: I was looking all over for this) <1...Nd4 2.Qd3 Nxf3+ 3.Qxf3 Bxe4>...so simple once you see it> Brilliant, I like this very subtle move you found. Sorry for shoddily pushing you as Sherlock Holmes! <sol 64022 <1...Bg1 2.Rg2 Qxg2+ 3.Qxg2 Rxg2 4.Kxg2 Bxe3> and Black wins> Thoughtful but heavy weather. Computer is cleverer here. 1...Qe1+ 2. Kxh2 Qg3+ 3. Kh1 Qh3+ 4. Rh2 Qf1+ 5. Bg1 Qxg1# <sol 79588 <1.Rxg6 hxg6 2.Qg7+ Ke8 3.Bf6> and Black is lost since mate is threatened at <e7> and the Bishop covers <h4> preventing any Black checks (also, the Black King is prevented from running away to <d8>)> Serious hard work but computer has things on its mind. 1. Rg4 c2 2.Rf4+ Bf5 3. Qf6+ Ke8 4. Rxf6
White threatens mate in the lower ranks or Black exchanges Rs as under; 1. Rg4 c2 2. Rf4+ Bf5 3. Qf6+ Ke8 4. Rxf5 Qh1+ 5. Kg3 Qe1+ 6. Kh3 Qh1+ 7. Bh2 exf5 8. Qxc6+ Ke7 9. Qxc2 and wins. Your effort is admirable as ever, I assure you.
Hmmm... Danner Spanner! Thanks for the encouraging words on POTD. It gave me real hell today; Kupreichik got away with murder. Bandwagon! Only <Jfp> pays attention. Out to day to service my car and get some antivirus. Open your mail sometimes. |

 | | morfishine: Good morning <sevenseaman>! 57894 was my fault entirely: Somehow I overlooked this problem from the get-go, so had no familiar position to look for: I was reduced to looking for a number! Yes, nice piece win + game by the computer in 79588
And on 64022, isn't that a neat dance-jog the Black Queen undertakes? BTW: I replied to your email |

Man, i was thinking whole time for rook sac on e7 and it turned out to be something else!> Well you short-sold your cow as a goat. First move is R sac at e7. 1. Bb6 is defeated by 1...Bc5+.(See Morf's sol). <<44505> 1.Bg7! Wins.> It does not. The Sol is ( 1. Qh5 Nxg3 2. Bxg7+ Kxg7 3. My opinion is that, creating a simple tactic on board takes more energy than solving a bit difficult one- but its only me, and i might be wrong also :)> You are not wrong. That is why I envy your rating. Why did you not try <# 36342> to test your rating? But a promise; when we meet face to face we shall play only to your strength, i.e. otb; sharpen it. Did you try ISP? A lappy is only good if you are connected. |
