| Jan-31-11 | | percyblakeney: I made a list with dramatic and memorable games with some sort of symbolic significance rather than going for “best”, and after picking only black wins first I decided to go all black, ending up with this list: 1. Kasparov’s last win, and not a bad one either. A stable top ten player like Adams, with white, is crushed in 26 moves in Linares when Kasparov wins the tournament for the ninth time: Adams vs Kasparov, 2005
2. Kasparov loses in Linares for the first time in many years and for the first time with white in even more years, against 15-year-old Radjabov: Kasparov vs Radjabov, 2003
3. Carlsen, just turned 17, beats Kramnik with black in Wijk and shares first place: Kramnik vs Carlsen, 2008
4. Radjabov shared first in Wijk 2007 after several brilliant wins with the KID, this one probably being the prettiest: Shirov vs Radjabov, 2007
5. Anand scores his second black win in a row in the title match against Kramnik after a cute finish: Kramnik vs Anand, 2008
6. Radjabov becomes the first and last player to beat both Kasparov and Anand with black the same year after a nice queen sacrifice: Anand vs Radjabov, 2003
7. Not the best but the most intense game of Topalov-Anand and the one that decided the match: Topalov vs Anand, 2010
8. Game 2 in the title match between Kramnik and Topalov, filled with excitement: Topalov vs Kramnik, 2006
9. Two of the most entertaining players of the decade in a wild game: Morozevich vs Ivanchuk, 2004
10. Topalov scores 8-0 in the eight latest decisive games against Leko: Leko vs Topalov, 2009 |

(I would definitely vote for it.) |

| Feb-02-11 | | K9Empress: A game of the decade? oh how neat! I really like the Shapalov-Aronian game and the Bologan sandwich is a nice flashback to Petrosian vs Spassky, 1966 with the Qh8. ok ok, I will nominate 5 now and 5 later 1.
Judit Polgar vs Kasparov, 2002 Iknow Iknow, more fit for a "historical importance" game prize than a brilliancy prize, but still, Go Judy! I like to believe this game was the reason for Kaspo's retirement. I can't help imagine him thinking something like "I lost to a computer, I played the most disappointing world championship match in the history of chess, and now I got beat by a girl? like, I'm done." 2.

N Pogonina vs The World, 2009 I followed this game very closely on chess.com and even suggested a few moves in the late opening-early middlegame stage. some IMs and FMs and several NM and CMs in the world team. One of Natalias's favorite games. Her husband must b proud. |

 | | tpstar: GAME OF THE DECADE
1) Topalov vs Kramnik, 2008 Topalov was the key principal bringing about Reunification, forcing Kramnik to play under FIDE against his will and forcing Kramnik to play in Mexico City 2007 too, and any other interpretations are revisionist history. Here he punishes Kramnik's highly suspicious behavior for the record. 2) Kramnik vs Leko, 2004 The highlight of Brissago 2004, affirming Humans over Machines. 25 ... Qd3!! is one for the ages by the perpetually underappreciated Leko. 3) Topalov vs Anand, 2005 Another Knight sacrifice on f7, with beautiful follow-up in the middlegame and endgame. 4) Karjakin vs Anand, 2006 Anand gets all the credit for this two piece sacrifice leading to a brilliant mating attack in an ultrasharp Sicilian line. 5) Kramnik vs Anand, 2008 Anand upends Kramnik again to take the lead early in Bonn 2008 featuring a piquant finish. I prefer this Game 5 over that Game 3 with the missed mate. 6) Krasenkow vs Nakamura, 2007 21 ... Qxf2+!! is a thunderbolt! Everybody knew Nakamura would be big someday ... 7) Carlsen vs H A Gretarsson, 2003 Those twelve year-olds are pretty sharp with the tactics, eh? Impressive. 8) Kiril Georgiev vs Nisipeanu, 2006 Sacrifices are even harder when there's no clear continuation. Great attack by Black. 9) V Malakhov vs V Zvjaginsev, 2004 This game has everything: exchange sacrifice, piece sacrifice, Queen sacrifice, and finally Pawn promotion. Stunning. 10) A Timofeev vs D Khismatullin, 2009 One of the most distinctive endgames ever. *****
I will let my friend <SirChrislov> tally the votes. =) |

 | | Chnebelgrind: Thanks <SirChrislov>. Interesting result: 3 Anand-Topalov games
3 Radjabov wins with the black pieces
3 Kramnik losses
3 masterpieces of Anand, Polgar and Moro.
No games of Carlsen and Aronian! Their decade still to come? |

 | | tpstar: <SirChrislov> Great job with the Game of the Decade voting! Now they all need puns. ;>D Technically the last three are all #10.
<3 Anand-Topalov games> Topalov was riding high in 2005 and came oh-so-close in WC matches against both Kramnik and Anand. He just might put it back together again before Aronian takes over. <3 Radjabov wins> Thanks to <percyblakeney> of course. :-) <2 Kasparov losses> Ranked highly due to his overall dominance. <No games of Carlsen and Aronian> A function of the voting cohort. 100 voters would surely nominate their games more. Or maybe they are being slighted for some overbearing fans around here. Just a hypothesis. =) |

 | | tpstar: <cormier> I mix up my defenses against students so our games are less predictable each time. One student always plays 1. d4, and another likes the King's Indian attack with Nf3/g3/Bg2, so I use an occasional 1 ... f5 in practice but not in rated games. I do like an early ... f5 against the English, like 1. c4 e5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. g3 f5, as giving Black good play. I tell students that the Dutch is enterprising, yet Black must mind the weaknesses on f7 and e6 all day. |

| Mar-06-11 | | cormier: <<tpstar>> hi you can have fun at <<playgroundplayer>> forum, where i play a tcheck-defence against his polish and then completely missed(overlook) some easy moves while working at the same time .... lol ..... tks |

 | | OhioChessFan: Dr. Tony, a question about a cliched movie scene. The platoon is under attack. Jones, the newbie that looks like Opie, is hit. It's bad. "Hang on buddy!" his best friend cries. "Stay with us Jones!" the sergeant yells. Besides the dramatics, does yelling encouragement to hang on at a person who might be dying really accomplish anything? |
