Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Tata Steel Challengers (2017)

The 2017 Tata Steel Challengers took place from 14-29 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. The 14-player single round-robin offered the winner an automatic place in the 2018 Tata Steel Masters. Austria's Markus Ragger was top seed, while 16-year-old World Junior Champion Jeffery Xiong from the USA was one of the players to watch. The time control was 100 minutes for 40 moves followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. If two or more players tied for first place then a rapid or blitz playoff would be held. (1) Gawain Jones took first, winning the tiebreak against Markus Ragger, and qualified for Tata Steel Masters (2018).

Jan-10-17  tim butler: Good luck Jeffery Xiong. Have fun in the tournament.
Jan-11-17  Imran Iskandar: Will definitely be rooting for Jeffery Xiong! He was impressive in last year's US Champs and could well be a future elite player.

ketchuplover: May Xiong be never wrong
Jan-11-17  Octavia: good luck to Gawain & Erwin!
Jan-12-17  Paint My Dragon: Gawain scored 3/4 at last night's opening of the Pro Chess League. Only lost to MVL, so should be feeling reasonably content on his journey to Wijk.

hansj: Good Luck to GM Eric Hansen!
Jan-12-17  dumbgai: I put a few chessbucks on Hansen. It's a wide open field this year, I think someone like Hansen has a realistic chance of scoring well and winning the tournament.
Jan-13-17  Mr. V: Anybody except Sopiko, likely.

keypusher: Her son is just over three months old, so she (and her husband) may not be getting a lot of sleep these days.
Jan-14-17  dm1991: Interesting there's no Jeffrey Xiong hype going on. I am jumping into the hype train and i hope he'll end up in the A section next year. The only concern i have is he might be a bit too pragmatic. If there was only Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa i would then root for him.
Jan-14-17  nok: Smirin and Xiong must be the favorites.
Jan-14-17  Gryz: I suspect nobody will stand a chance against Jorden van Foreest.
Jan-14-17  N0B0DY: <Gryz: I suspect <nobody> will stand a chance against Jorden van Foreest.>

Your reasoning is most probably correct.

Jan-14-17  Phi: Great start for Ragger, beating the second highest rated player and reaching 2700 again.
Jan-14-17  WorstPlayerEver: Watch out for Bobby Cheng!
Jan-15-17  Imran Iskandar: Xiong bounces back, now all my favorites Xiong, van Foreest and Hansen are on 50%.
Jan-16-17  LuckyChucky: GJones and GawainJones in the table above must be a tag team. The partners are off to a good start. I keep watching out for Bobby Cheng but haven't caught him loitering around yet.
Jan-16-17  GlennOliver: I'm thinking of placing a bet on the outcome of the game -

G. Jones vs. Gawain Jones

One way or another, I expect Gawain to gain the full point.

Jan-16-17  waustad: That they haven't done anything about that Jones snafu doesn't surprise me. Have they lost interest?
Jan-17-17  schweigzwang: I don't understand why all the tournaments & sites can't key everything off of the FIDE ID numbers. If it's done correctly at the start, everybody downstream will be able to report accurate information too.
Jan-17-17  belgradegambit: Ragger doing his Bobby Fischer impression, 4 games, 4 wins.
Jan-17-17  ndg2: Markus on fire! I want to see this guy firmly established as a genuine 2700+.

For years now he was always close or oscillating around it. Maybe he can stabilize.

Jan-17-17  Mr. V: It's about time Ragger got an invitation to the Elite
Jan-17-17  fisayo123: To be fair, he's had a relatively easy start. Facing a WGM and the weakest grandmaster in the field is a very nice advantage to have in the first 4 games.
Jan-17-17  sonia91: The WGM is actually a GM-elect: http://ratings.fide.com/title_appli...
