Jan-14-06  percyblakeney: Well done by Marlies Bensdorp (2230) to win against the more than 300 ELO higher rated GM Li Shilong, even if it was a bit lucky... Bensdorp, to move, won from this position with white:

Jan-14-06  Pawsome: <Percyblakeney> how do you manage to insert diagrams in your posts? On the game pictured: at one point Li Shilong could have on won the exchange and seemed to have the game well in hand. This certainly was a day of surprises in steeltown. After his fine performance in the Asian championships, where he spanked some of the highest rated players, I expected to Shilong to win this tourney. Of course he may still.
Jan-14-06  percyblakeney: <Pawsome> Yes, a couple of bad blunders in the end of that game... Help with diagrams can be found here:

Jan-14-06  jhoro: <Pawsome: how do you manage to insert diagrams in your posts?> save a "position" in "fen" format, open the file (it is text), copy the position and then paste it in your post. you should see it in the post preview. if you use Winboard, it can do this for you: http://www.tim-mann.org/xboard.html
Jan-14-06  EmperorAtahualpa: GM Suat Atalik played his own wife today in the GM-C group of the Corus Chess tournament. :) And he won! I would have expected them to draw. :)

By the way, I think it was their first official game against each other.

Jan-15-06  Karpova: Nice final position in Atalik, Ekaterina - Werle, Jan 0-1

<<<<<<Corus 2006 pictures>>>>>>

The pictures I took at Corus 2006 are now online! You can view them on the following website:

http://corus2006.photos.us.com

If you have questions or comments about the pictures or the website, or if you want the original pictures, please write me a message on my EmperorAtahualpa chessforum. Thanks.

P.S.: Since visitors were not allowed to use flash photography and my tripod was too big to set up in the middle of the crowd, many pictures turned out blurred. Originally, I had over 150 pictures but only these 74 were good enough to put on my website. :( You will notice that some of these pictures are blurred too, but you will also notice that they get better along the way.

Jan-16-06  Shams: <GM Suat Atalik played his own wife today in the GM-C group of the Corus Chess tournament. :) And he won! I would have expected them to draw. :)> Hey Atalik, have you stopped beating your wife yet? haw!

He is threatening to run away with the tournament. Today's 35.Qxf7 against Shilong was very nice.

sisyphus: I think it's cute how Cyril Marcelin dispatched Marlies Bensdorp. He sacs his queen; but the a-pawn is unstoppable.

She was never really in it, anyway. 15.... a6 almost certainly loses a pawn.

Jan-20-06  sleepkid: doesn't anyone else here think that Suat Atalik is way too strong for Group C? I mean, he should really be in Group B.

He's always been a fairly dangerous GM.

Jan-20-06  Feast: 15.b4 nice by Jonkman

Jan-21-06  Mameluk: And this happens when an Egytian sees a blond girl.
Jan-25-06  TrueBlue: if I was playing with her, I would be too busy asking her for her phone number to concentrate on the game. I bet even Topalov will have hard time concentrating playing against her.
Jan-25-06  Kola: Atalik (Male) is bullying all other players in C. Why is this veteran there anyways? He should be in B or A.

Sneaky: He has to win group C before he gets to play in group B. It's like a ladder. We'll see him in the A group one year, I predict.
Jan-26-06  Bobak Zahmat: <Kola> In Group A he would not stand his ground. He would be a victim of the sharks like Kamsky. Even in Group B he would play for the top places.
Jan-26-06  dakgootje: <TrueBlue> Doubt whether you need 2 hours for getting her phone number and if so maybe its hopeless after all so you could just concentrate on the game ;-)
Jan-26-06  yogi1986: li shilong, 100% decisive games! best fighter of the tournament? and a plus score to boot
