tamar: Mamedyarov in the lead, but second dubious position in a row.

Here as Black against L'Ami he is an exchange up, but either has to give up the pawn on b7 or allow Ne4 threatening knight on d4 and check on f6.

Mar-15-15  diagonal: <kingscrusher>: thanks! Your Video Annotation light up my day:

Spectacular game and win by Bisby, taking the lead with White from the start to the finish as you would say in formula one :)

Congrats to FM <Daniel Bisby> for this masterpiece at Reykjavik Open: D Bisby vs Movsesian, 2015

Penguincw: L'Ami with the upset, as he downs top seed Mamedyarov in a mere 21 moves and has now won 3 games in a row.

Penguincw: I just realized that Navara got a bye today. :| He actually has 5.5 points, but <cg> doesn't count byes.

Mar-15-15  haydn20: Instructive position in Fier-Eljanov, where Stockfish has 58. Qxf8! is best and draws, whereas 58. Bd3?? loses.
Mar-16-15  Sokrates: Alexandr Hilario Takeda dos Santos Fier. Now that's a name for the score sheet!

Penguincw: Yesterday, top seed Mamedyarov went down. Today, 2nd seed Navara falls to 13th seed Fier. Wow. Beware Eljanov...
Mar-16-15  beenthere240: Wasn't Carlsen Sr. in this tournament?
Mar-16-15  PhilFeeley: <Beware Eljanov> Actually, it's beware L'Ami. He seems to be running away with it.
Mar-16-15  Mr. V: Sarasadat Khademalsharieh is playing well here.
Mar-16-15  PhilFeeley: Corrected crosstable after round 8. Only the top 10:

1 11 GM L'ami Erwin NED 7.5
2 3 GM Eljanov Pavel UKR 6.5
3 13 GM Fier Alexandr BRA 6.5
4 9 GM Naroditsky Daniel U20 USA 6.5
5 8 GM Jones Gawain C B ENG 6.5
6 16 GM Hansen Eric CAN 6.5
7 4 GM Melkumyan Hrant ARM 6.5
8 6 GM Hammer Jon Ludvig NOR 6.5
9 21 IM Stopa Jacek POL 6.0
10 1 GM Mamedyarov Shakhriyar AZE 6.0

Mar-16-15  Atking: I don't see GM Navara in the list neither here nor ChessBase last article about this tournament. Navara should be among the leader. What is the problem?

I'm sure you and I (and some others) would like to see Eljanov lose tomorrow. ;)

P.S. After reading over what I posted, I realized I misused the word. In Round <7>, the <1st> seed (Mamedyarov) lost. In Round <8>, the <2nd> seed (Navara) lost. Could it be that in Round <9> the <3rd> seed (Eljanov) loses?

Mar-17-15  morfishine: Yusupov's slip against Navara: Navara vs Yusupov, 2015

*****

Mar-17-15  PhilFeeley: <Penguincw> I was wondering why L'Ami wasn't paired with Eljanov this round. Maybe the last one?
Mar-17-15  PhilFeeley: Navara's on 5.5/8, ranked 23rd according to chess-results. He could be out of it.
Mar-17-15  Boomie: ->

Rather remarkable results for the munchkin Kazakh Zhansaya Abdumalik.

http://chess-results.com/tnr143563....

She's beaten two GMs and has gained a whopping 33 rating points.

Mar-17-15  PhilFeeley: Hansen playing black against Eljanov, and is slightly better after 10 moves.

Go Canada!

Mar-17-15  haydn20: The first four boards are draws or are about to be. Looks like Mamedyarov is making a "comeback" vs Stopa to get to 7, while Movsesian falls again, to a player 150 pts below him, and this player, Grover, will also move to 7 pts.

Penguincw: Navara beats Marc Esserman (2426) for his first win since Friday (4 days ago).
Mar-17-15  haydn20: l'Ami persisted in a drawing position, and his opponent faltered, so at least l'Ami has an initiative.

Penguincw: And Hansen has drawn the 3rd seed Eljanov. Eljanov was under mild time pressure, but a 3-fold repetition secured the draw. Huge result for Hansen, as he proves he can play any type of opposition. Prior to facing the 1st and 3rd seeds, the average rating of his opponents was 2349!

Not only it is a huge result for Hansen, but it's a big one for L'Ami as well. If he at least draws Melkumyan, he will clinch at least a share of first; a win would secure first. In his game, he is up a pawn in a rook and queen endgame. His opponent also has 2 minutes to play 6 moves.

Mar-17-15  haydn20: That olde wisdom--when outplayed complicate--saves Mosesian. He gives Black a choice between a reasonable move and a winning move, and Black misses the winning 26...Kxe7.
