Troller: Relatively mediocre field this year, normally there are a couple of 2700+ guys. Maybe the remote location in Reykjavík has something to do with it?

Favourites could be Saric (he already won it in 2018), Sarana, Bluebaum, Gradelius, Nisi - but as usual, so many 2650+ players that the number of potential winners is huge. As of round 4, Hovhannisyan is the only player with 100%. He is playing black against Mamedov today.

Aug-30-21  siggemannen: Probably most 2700 haven't had time to vaccinate, busy playing hyper blitz or streaming on twitch. But these events are usually super-competitive nontheless, gonna be some nice games to check out

I would probably add Navara to your list of favorites. But your right, really could be anyone's tournament.

A possibility indeed. This event has most of its importance as a qualifier for the World Cup though, and here 2700 players are qualified by rating. That said, in 2017 and 2019 the event was won by Matlakov and Artemiev respectively, both entering the tournament with 2700+.

I would probably add Navara to your list of favorites.>

Today Navara has the white pieces against my compatriot, the talented Jonas Buhl Bjerre. For sure, a game I will be looking at later.

HeMateMe: the games aren't of high quality, a lot of mistakes in tactics. Looks more like 30 minute chess than longer controls.
Sep-07-21  AdolfoAugusto: I was disappointed with Rauf Mamedov (and Mamedov is supposed to be a popular player player, and is somehow a idol of mine) play (about rounds 7 to 9) when instead of going all in to play for first he tried to stay close with short draws until Deac defeated him.
Sep-21-21  fisayo123: This was a sham of a European Individual championship.

Compare 2019 to 2021

In 2019 : 137 players over 2500

In 2021 : 65 players over 2500
