GrahamClayton: "In the summer of 1939, the first Ventnor City Invitation Tournament was held in the Sun Room of the Municipal Pier at Ventnor City, N. J. Admittedly an experiment, it turned out to be an event as enjoyable as it was distinguished. Twelve players were invited, and a splendidly balanced tournament resulted. Although none of the grandmasters were included, the play was of a high level and was characterized by its fighting quality. A young newcomer, Olaf Ulvestad from Seattle, contributed to the color and "fightingness" of the play.
