The event was sponsored by the newspaper Clarín and is also known as the 3rd Clarin Tournament, after Buenos Aires (Clarin) (1978) and Buenos Aires (Clarin) (1979). About 1,000 people (1) attended the opening ceremony in Teatro Presidente Alvear (1, 2) where the tournament was held. | Jun-25-16 | | diagonal: <A superb result for Larsen; I wonder what his TPR was?> According to chessmetrics (historical ELO by Jeff Sonas), Larsen's tournament triumphs at 2nd and 3rd Clarin, played in Buenos Aires in 1979 and 1980 respectively, were indeed the (statistically) best performances by Bent Larsen. Of course, this legendary player, awarded the Grandmaster title in 1956, is spontaneously remembered first for his stunning tournament wins in the late 1960s; afterwards (don't mention Fischer) in the 1970s and early 1980s his results were somehow more volatile, still showing brilliant achievements, ie. winning the strong Interzonal at Biel in 1976 outright (above Portisch, Petrosian, Tal, Smyslov, Hübner, R. Byrne, etc.), or the mentioned Clarin invitation tournaments, sometimes forgotten. Pictures from the 3rd Clarin (1980):

As an aside, in an elite event today, a TPR of 2731 would merit notice only as a subpar performance by one of the top players, so much have top FIDE ratings inflated, but it was quite enough to come out winner in this top-class event from 1980. |

| | Fusilli: <offramp> <14 Giardelli,Sergio Carlos 2300 +70> The tournament was a nice opportunity for IM Sergio Giardelli, who passed away two years ago at 60. Even in last place, he performed better than expectations. After all, he was over 200 points below in Elo than everyone else. He was a very nice guy, loved by everyone. |
