The event was sponsored by the newspaper Clarín, and is also known as the 2nd Clarin Tournament. It followed up the success of Buenos Aires (Clarin) (1978), and was continued next year with Buenos Aires (Clarin) (1980). The playing venue was Casacuberta Salon (1) of the Teatro General San Martín (2) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. (3) Together with huge pictures of Miguel Najdorf and Roberto Grau, the theatre had an exhibition of about 100 objects to commemorate the 1939 Buenos Aires Olympiad and the players who decided to stay in Argentina during the War. (3) In addition to local players, the foreign masters included Spassky (ranked World #3), Larsen (#7), and Petrosian (#10). Tournament Director: Carlos Guimard. FIDE category: 11 (GM norm 7½, IM norm 6, FM norm 4 points). (3) An impressive performance by 69-year-old Najdorf. For Petrosian (6 points only) the tournament was a kind of warm-up before the Korchnoi - Petrosian Candidates Quarterfinal (1980). "The great Danish master, Bent Larsen, didn't have a very successful 1979. He failed to make the Candidates' matches, scored only 50 percent at Tilburg (1979), and perhaps the worst blow of all, finished last at Montreal (1979). Dead last is not dead, though, and Larsen appeared fully recovered." (4) He won by a staggering three points, ceding only 4 draws in 13 rounds. | Apr-11-16 | | Joseph Blackcape: Pretty surprising to see Petrosian not only to draw with a 2360 Franco, but at least it was a quick draw in the last round. The real weird thing is him losing (and resigning before an unavoidable mate) to a 2200 FM Tempone, who only scored 2 point in the other 12 games. As a warm up it probably didn't work for him too well either, since next he lost the match with Korchnoi without winning even 1 game too. |

 | | Fusilli: The tournament was the result of Najdorf unrelenting efforts to promote chess in Argentina. He convinced the Clarin newspaper to fund the series of Clarin tournaments in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In promoting this tournament, he frequently referred to it as having seven world champions on its roster: Spassky and Petrosian, regular champions; Panno, Ivkov, Gheorghiu and Lombardy, world junior champions; and Tempone, world U-16 champion in 1979. The fans were a bit let down by the large number of draws in 25 moves or less, but Larsen more than compensated for it with his unwavering fighting spirit and great chess. |

He also defeated world chess championship candidate Borislav lvkov and 2 time Mar Del Plata tournament winner Oscar Panno. He also won against another Argentine chess player Miguel Quinteros, who played credibly in the chess olympiad 1976. Along with this, he drew against top players like Najdorf, Lombardy and Gheorghiu. According to chessmetrics historical player ratings, the average player rating was around 2630. And since Larsen went undefeated in this tournament, He has been given a tournament performance of 2800! What a performance by Larsen when he was almost past his prime. |
