European Rapid Championship (2017)

The 2017 European Rapid Championship was held in Katowice (Poland) on December 16 and December 17 as an 11-round Swiss System open tournament. The time control was 15 minutes per player with a 10-second increment per move. Chief arbiter: Tomasz Delega. The top seed was Ernesto Inarkiev.

19-year-old IM Maksim Vavulin, seeded 68th before the tournament, won with 10/11 after upsetting early leader Jan-Krzysztof Duda in the final round. Five players finished with 9.5/11; Duda took silver and Pavel Ponkratov bronze, while the only player to defeat Vavulin, blitz section champion Sergei Zhigalko, placed just outside the medals in fourth.

  Sokrates: Never heard of Maksim Vavulin before. +10 -1 =0 is a Fischer-like result - very impressive in this lot of strong competitors. I assume we shall learn more about this young genius in future.

  Sokrates: A good guess, <WorstPlayerEver>, and I hope he studies "something" and only plays chess occasionally. But he sure plays some very entertaining chess - the games are a joy to play through.
Dec-22-17  fisayo123: He's a promising Russian talent. I don't know if he has his 3 GM norms now but he's been known to be one of the highest rated IM's in the world.

Duda was leading the way all through but Vavulin crushed him in the last round.
