HeMateMe: hmm....the roster is a bit slack in star power. Is the prize money awarded in petrol vouchers this year?
Jan-01-23  GlennOliver: <HeMateMe>

c. £20K prize money across all categories.

So presumably more than 50% of that to the winner of the main event.

Not a bad start to the year for someone.

Jan-01-23  GlennOliver: Sparkling win for Harry Grieve in the 4th round, playing Black against Romain Edouard, GM and the historically highest-ranked player in the tournament.
Jan-03-23  Ninas Husband: <HeMateMe> <Is the prize money awarded in petrol vouchers this year?> Did you hear that on the telly? :)

HeMateMe: Hastings used to have some star Euro guests, sometimes a pair of top Russians. I think Korchnoi, Karpov, Smyslov and Petrosian have played Hastings. I realize every year can't be dynamite, but I think the organizers should put up a modest appearance fee for some of: Adams, Short, Nunn, ...?

perfidious: <HMM>, this is what was once known as the Hastings Challengers event, not the round robin tourney, which featured those players you named--of course it is not quite the same. The winner advances to year's Premier, facing some big names, if not quite what it once was.

Sadly, I think you are wrong and that this poor shadow of former Hastings tournaments <is> the main event. Unless I'm mistaken (always a possibility) all that remains of the current Annual Hastings Congress are some weekend rapid events.

Still, at least we've only a week to wait until Wijk aan Zee and a chance to see which of the current crop of upcoming youngsters is able to unseat some Super GMs.

perfidious: <goodevans>, that would be unfortunate indeed; the Premier was always worthwhile and the Challengers attracted quite a number of strong players.
