Smederevska Palanka Interzonal (Women) (1987) |
"Who would have thought that the participants of the interzonal tournament would be greeted by such heat in Smederevska Palanka - 37-40 °C in the shade - that even the most careful organization and management could not make them forget. The air conditioning installed in the hall did not alleviate the suffering much. When the first round began, the temperature in the hall was 33 °C." (Sakkélet, transl.) "The greatest joy at the start was experienced by our national team player and national champion, international master Alisa Maric. Against former world champion Nona Gaprindashvili, the biggest favorite, she played bravely and without respect. For a long time it seemed that the game would end in a draw. However, Gaprindashvili forced the game and overlooked one of Maric's tactical moves, which led to her defeat. The unexpected defeat hit the Soviet player hard. Immediately after the game, she protested to the tournament director Dejan Stablovic about the unbearable heat in the hall and threatened that if the conditions did not change by tomorrow, she would leave the tournament. The organizers have taken measures to have the cooling devices .. ready by the start of tomorrow's second round. ... The tournament was opened by Slobodan Milosevic, president of the organizing committee, and then all the participants were welcomed by FIDE secretary general Kok Ann Lim." (ПОЛИТИКА, transl.)
