Jun-16-04		acirce: <rochade18> With a little help from Kasparov and Leko it is. This wasn't really Armenia, it was more like "Armenian and Armenian-related players".. But actually Armenia is a quite strong chess country, especially considering its size. Only Russia has more players in Libya FIDE WC, for example.

Jun-16-04		rochade18: Yes I see. I forgot that Kasparov has an Armenian mother. I've read somewhere that Garry was Born in Azerbaidjan and then became a Russian. But on the other hand he is son of Armenian and (German-)Jewish parents.

Jun-16-04		acirce: Yes, Garry was born in Azerbaijan, part of the USSR by then of course. His mother was Armenian. Leko is married to an Armenian and Gelfand was a student of Petrosian's.

Jun-16-04		Swindler: On the issue about big chess countries, wouldn't Iceland rank high? I've heard they have the most GM's per capita in the world. Anyway, these are good games! Nice to see the world top playing eachother.

Jun-16-04		acirce: <Swindler> Iceland has about 300.000 inhabitants and 9 GM's which is quite a feat. None of them is close to the top though unless you want to count Hjartarson.

Jun-16-04		Swindler: True, but they have Helgi and Fridrick Olafsson who are over 2500, but it's still a way to the top. Why can't you count Hjartarson? Has he emigrated?

Jun-16-04		acirce: I don't know if I'd count a 2640'er as <close to the top> but of course it depends on what you mean with close and what you mean with the top! :)

Jun-17-04		MoonlitKnight: If China had the same ratio of GMs, they would have a total of about 40.000 GMs. That would really be something!

Jun-17-04		600POUNDGORILLA: Don't kid yourself. China is well on the way to 40,000 GMs. Give them a few years.

Apr-24-07		Hot Logic: ha! 400 in 30 years maybe, but if there are 40,000 GMs they will have to scrap the title because it won't mean anything anymore. I think the current GM title is still worth something because it's a useful reference for comparison to ordinary players, but then again, it seems rather 'easy' to reach expert strength these days, so maybe everything should be bumped down a notch?

Sep-12-07		Resignation Trap: <chessmoron> is right, 2.5-1.5 isn't being "wiped up", it's a minimal win. At the same event, the Chinese women defeated their Armenian counterparts 2-1. So, how about a team match "Armenia vs. China" ?

May-13-08		Akuni: Teams were: Armenia: (-1) Kasparov +1 Akopian -1 Vaganian +1 Lputian -2 Gelfand -2 Leko +2 World: Total (+1) Anand +1 Svidler +2 Adams = Bacrot +1 Van Wely -3 Vallejo Pons = A very close match. Consolations to van Wely, he does try so very hard. (As you can see, the World team wasn't as strong as possible, which is of course forgivable, and the Armenian team was bolstered by others. Again, we can let it slide)

Jul-31-08		khursh: Kasparov = Gasparian (mother is Armenian) Gelfand = Petrossian's last student Leko = Wife and coach are Armenians "Armenians" is not the same as "team Armenia" But you can argue that others don't have world nationality :) otherwise how could they represent world ? only communists could argue that they are true internationals to represent the world:))))))
