AylerKupp: <<Pedro Fernandez> Maybe I am infected for some <Sokratian> philosophical virus whose cure will require extensive research by <AylerKupp>.>

I will tell you what I will do. I'm in the process of (finally!) getting a new computer and, once I have it, I will download and install a neural network software package. I will download all your <> posts and I will have the neural network analyze them to see if they show any evidence of a philosophical virus.

But I think I already know what it will say, that you are definitely infected with that philosophical virus, and that there is no cure for it. I suggest that as a precaution you immediately quarantine yourself and wear a mask so that you don't infect others with it.

But fortunately it is not fatal. I think that it's only lingering effect will be that you will find that you feel the need to spend more and more time to spend on chess-related activities, and it will have the same effect on all of those you infect, even if they don't know anything about ajedrez. So make sure that you engage only in safe chess.

AylerKupp: <<Sokrates> I can imagine the expression on kid 1's face.>

Once again that reminds me of yet another story. I was flying home from Atlanta, GA to Los Angeles, CA when somewhere over Kansas a little girl, about 7 or 8, asked me what time it was. I asked her: "The time where? The time in Atlanta where we left from, the time in Los Angeles where we are going, or the time in Kansas where we are now flying over?" She, of course, had no concept of time zones.

I still remember the wide-eyed expression on the girl's face when I said that. But I am sure that from then on she always listened to her mother when her mother said that she should not talk to strangers.

Nov-05-20  Clemens Scheitz: Having an inquisitive philosophical mind is commendable even if it leads to confusion, but confusing inquisitive little girls is philosophically not commendable.

Sokrates: Amidst the splendid isolation in my Corona haunted country it is consoling to read your witty thoughts, gentlemen. Thanks.
Nov-05-20  Clemens Scheitz: The pleasure of having you around is all ours, or at least mine dear <Sokrates>, and I hope the "isolation of your Corona haunted country" is not as bad as it sounds, hopefully your "samfundssind "spirit keep things under control, in any case take good care of yourself and stay safe.

PS. Why so many mink farms ? Do you guys love furs or is it mostly for export ? Are there many animal rights groups that oppose their existence ? What's going to happen to them now that a mutated form of the virus was found in them ?

Premium Chessgames Member
  Sokrates: Dear <Clemens>,

Many thanks for your kind words. I always appreciate your posts.

About mink.

Denmark is - now was - world leader in the mink industry. Through generations of mink farmers they were able to refine the breed of mink under relatively decent conditions. The skins were of first class quality and the also have/had the world's leading auktion house for fur, Kopenhagen Fur.

Although the well-being of the animals has been improved over the years - and being significantly better than anywhere else - they were heavily critisized the past decades from various societies for the protection of animals. Also the political far left have been opponents to the way mink are treated. The main critics is that being locked in small cages is completely against the nature of wild mink, and mink is indeed a wild animal which in nature covers large areas to seek out prey. It doesn't help their case either that mink, as we know, are primarily for the very rich, and fur in general has not exactly been political correct for decades.

Their argument for keeping the industry in Denmark has always been that the minks are better treated here than anywhere else, and if they quit the industry it would just move to other places with far worse conditions for the mink. Market mechanisms, you know.

About Covid and mink.
All minks in Denmark will now be destructed - millions were already during the past months. All farms will be sealed, and since most of them are in the Northern Jutland (the big peninsula), this whole region of Jutland has been declared closed by our prime minister. People are told and sharply adviced not to socialise more than absolutely necessary and not to leave the region. All this in a collaboration between the government and the health authorities.

Unfortunately, it turned out that the mink farms got easily infected, but that is not the worst: the virus began to mutate into 5 other varieties of Covid, varities that probably won't respond positively to the vaccines that are soon coming to our doorsteps. That means that if you get no. 5 variety (that one in particular) the new vaccine wouldn't work. You would get the disease.

That is why our prime minister has taken radical steps and spoken directly to the people. By no means do they want Denmark to become the new Wuhan. They will be very determinated in detecting and limiting the disease to those who got it. During the past months there has been an intense testing of the virus, so they have a pretty good overlook.

But they also tell us not to panic. Very very few have got the mutated virus and their are fairly good prospects for containing the disease.

Personally, I am quite confident that they will succeed. We have attacked the disease quite rationally and scientifically all the way, and except for a few right wing politicians, this whole Covid19 situation has stayed clear of political debate. Science rules this, not political, ideological agendas.

As for the mink industry, my tears are dry by losing it. I know it is easy for me to say, I won't lose my income on that account. But apart from indisputable Covid threat I see no perspective in keeping millions of beautiful wild animals just for the pleasure of a tiny group of super rich ladies. As my wife said, why don't they instead invent some super expensive, exclusive fabrics made of sustainable materials?

Nov-06-20  Clemens Scheitz: Thanks for taking the time to respond <Sokrates>, I have a much clearer picture of the situation in your admirable country now. Hopefully coming back to some kind of normality happens soon for the Danes.

As far as chess, I'm disappointed that there are 3 days with no games between Firouzja-Fedoseev ( Wednesday) and So-Abdusattorov (Sunday) on the Speed Chess Championship, to give people more time to follow the vote counts on the nail-biting election perhaps ?

  Sokrates: You are welcome, <Clemens>.

On an end note: a couple of days ago they thought they had found a person infected with the above mentioned "Cluster 5" in another part of the country.

Fortunately, it turned out that the test had been subject to an error in the handling. Which is quite excusable since they handle hundreds of thousands of tests these times. The retired old man had the normal Covid, which, of course, was bad enough for him. However, they are much better in treating the disease now than months ago, and we have only 738 deaths. Sweden: 6,022 in comparison.

Pedro Fernandez: My dear <Sokrates>, sorry for my late reply. First of all, I must apologize to you for not being explicit enough about the in-depth research that Dr. <AylerKupp> has been conducting, which will merit a significant investment of money in new equipment.

Already <AylerKupp> had discovered that the so-called Sophi-one, or SPV-1A, might not have a cure and therefore he needs to make sure of this by producing an effective anti-cure vaccine (and not the opposite!) whose objective is make sure of how to infect many more people.
It was my bad not having told you before, I'm very sorry.

Sokrates: Dear <Pedro>. I am honestly not quite sure what you apologize for or why, but I understand kindness, so thank you!

Pedro Fernandez: My dear <AylerKupp>, asssuming you're going to buy a desktop, I recommend you this one:

Is it not a prestigious brand? Don't worry about that, I can assure you that this one has better components that those known expensive brands. Now, if you want some fun together <Mrs. AylerKupp>, you can build your proper engine which is easier than peeling tangerines, seriously! I have built all of my computers. Anyway, I can help if you need some help, especially choosing the best quality components, but also ensambling. I own a super water cooling machine as I'm a gamer, but you don't need so expensive engine (well, I guess).

PS. I have your mail since a lot of years ago, but this one is in my old drives.

AylerKupp: <Pedro Fernandez> Thanks for the recommendation. I have previously bought Dell computers but I am dismayed at the ignorance of their so-called "technical support" staff. They typically did not understand even simple questions, like when I asked them who the vendors were for their HDDs the said "We use two, Seagate and Barracuda. Enough said.

I've built 2 PCs myself but that was quite a while ago when I was knowledgeable about what was available and had the interest to do so, and now I longer have either. So I think that I will buy a readily assembled system.

I'm actually in the market for 3 systems, 2 desktop systems for me and my wife plus a laptop. Both of our systems are nearing their end of life and much of the software out there won't run on our desktops and my laptop died some time ago and I want a replacement once I resume traveling. For my system I'm looking at a relatively high end, lots of memory and disk space and a reasonable number of cores. Price, while always a consideration, is not a constraint.

As far as my email I don't know where you got that from, but my chess-related email should have been obvious, It's also listed in my forum's header.

Check It Out: <AylerKupp> My wife swears by the Razer laptop she got earlier this year. May be worth looking in to, it's pretty high end.

Sokrates: <Check It Out: ... I would never put my email in a post.>

Neither would I. At another forum (about a different subject) I once unfortunately gave my email address. It was only there for 15 minutes or so, then I took it off, but nevertheless, in the following weeks I received quite a few advertising mails related to the site's subject. Fortunately, they could be cancelled at the source.

Pedro Fernandez: <DELL ''technician'' to <AylerKupp>>

''We have two types of HDDs: Barracuda and Seagate''. Unbelievable!

Okay my dear, DELL is okay, good quality and #1 in sales. I have purchased from them a few laptops in different epochs. But for a gamer ASUS or MSI is more usual.

Backing to desktops, the problem is that they are very proprietary; they cut your wings reducing alternatives and you also do not know the quality of the components that they include. The companies that manufacture the components are the same, but let's remember that those, who sell, order thousands of components to reduce costs, so I don't have confidence in production control and quality control. For this reason, and because I have more alternatives to choose from, I like to build them.

On the other hand I think it is better to buy comps with a dedicated (discrete) GPU instead of an integrated one. The same or even more delicate is the motherboard, they don't tell me what they are using (well, except if you buy an Alienware that is from DELL but it is expensive). But also other things: RAM, HDD for backup, SSD for the OS, sound card, PSU (very important!), Etc. It certainly costs you more to build it, but you are sure that its components are of the best quality. <AK> make sure the OS is 64 bit. My OS (W10 Pro 64) and my KB (the only QWERTY keyboards are Eng and Sp) are in English for maximum compatibility with the programs I download.

As for the monitor, make a sacrifice and buy a 4k 32'' ($350-400), it's worth it. About speakers-subwoofer, it's enough a Logitech 30-40 watts, another way neighbors gonna call the police, lol!

Anything I can help with, please email me. Pedro.

Premium Chessgames Member
Pedro Fernandez: Aah <AK>, don't buy old things, even recent. Let's recall that the computer world is obsolete since yesterday!
Premium Chessgames Member
Pedro Fernandez: Hey <AK> 'fourier' is for the great French mathematician, '0' for not any reason, '7' for Mickey Mantle and it is my preferred number like blue is my preferred colour.

It's not so obvious for me (I know your real names of course)

Premium Chessgames Member
Pedro Fernandez: We again here, <AylerKupp>. Be prepared with all your knowledge ready about the systems you want to purchase, but you should buy on Black Friday day in order to save a lot of money.

In general Costco, Target, Lowes, Walmart, Best Buy, Office Depot, Staples, etc., can't compete in prices with Newegg and Amazon in computers arena. 'One Dollar' stores don't sell computers.

AylerKupp: <Check It Out> May be worth looking in to, it's pretty high end.>

Thanks for the suggestion. But I will actually be looking for a low end laptop when the time comes since I will be using it primarily when traveling, which I hope to resume some day. So I'm looking for small size (my last laptop had an 11" screen but now the smallest you can get is about 13") and low weight (hence an SSD). I'll save the "heavy work" for my desktop.

With regards to spamming my email, yes, that's a concern but is only my chess-related email, not my "real" one. So it's not much of a concern since I don't use it much. I was spammed for a while but he got tired of it and stopped. And the worst that will happen is that I will get another email account. Neither a big deal nor an inconvenience.

AylerKupp: <Pedro Fernandez> Thanks for all your suggestions. But I fear that, once again, we're going off-topic from the subject of this page. So let's resume the discussion at my forum. I have commented on your suggestions starting at AylerKupp chessforum (kibitz #1678).

And sorry about not being obvious. I just didn't know how you associated with me.

Pedro Fernandez: <And sorry about> No idea my dear; I don't see why your Login at CG has to do with your e-mail. However, I can understand (I didn't kwow it though) you have dedicated that mail for anything related with CG, but I think it is not your private mail, at difference to my one.

PS. Off-topic, but I don't see an On-Topic nowhere. Even a Team Black vs Team White game. This is a cemetery.
