Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Hoogovens (1993)

The 55th Hoogovens was a 24-player knockout event held in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, 15-30 January 1993. The reason for 24 players (instead of 32) was that eight players (Karpov, Nunn, Salov, Hansen, Gelfand, Piket, Sokolov, Shirov) were seeded into Round 2. The matches consisted of two (four in the final) Classical games, with playoff games if necessary. Time control: 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 60 more minutes for the next 20 moves, then 30 more minutes to finish the game. If 1-1, two playoff games (Rapid 30 min), and if still equal (2-2), individual sudden death games (Rapid 15 min). First prize: 15,000 Dutch guilders. Those knocked out would bring points with them into the Hoogovens Open (1993) swiss tournament that was running in parallel. Tournament director: Piet Zwart. Chief arbiter: Thomas van Beekum. Number of games played: 62.

Anatoly Karpov beat Miguel Illescas 2.5-1.5 in the final. His 96th tournament victory, according to Tidskrift för Schack.
