Tolstoy Memorial (2021)

The first Tolstoy Memorial was a 10-player round-robin Rapid tournament held in "Yasnaya Polyana", Russia, 11-12 September 2021. It was organized by Leo Tolstoy's Yasnaya Polyana Museum-Estate and the Russian Chess Federation, in honor of the Russian author Leo Tolstoy. Time control: 15 minutes for the whole game, with 10 seconds added per move from move 1. Tournament category: XVII (2658) (based on Rapid ratings). Rounds 1 and 6 started at 3 pm local time. Chief organizer: Mark Gluhovsky. The chief arbiter Alexander Tkachev was assisted by Ilja Biriukov and others. Number of games played: 45.

Anish Giri won with 8/9, ahead of Abdusattorov (5.5/9) and Gelfand (5/9).

  PawnSac: Indeed. Giri demonstrates his position in the top 10 was well earned. When mixing it up with the B line up he comes out way on top.

Another note of interest.. The Grunfeld is a pet opening of Giri's and it has served him well. Since 2015 he has played 42 games with a score of... +6 -2 =34 and has taken out top players with it. Karjakin, Aronian, So, Mamedyarov, Wang Hao, and so on.
