Introduction
The Mongredien Prize, open to British players only. Mr. Mongredien gives a Prize of £21 for the winner in a series of games, in which a slight displacement of the pieces will be made, the nature of the displacement to be communicated to the players at the moment of commencing the games. Entrance 10s. 6d. Names of intending competitors to be sent to the Hon. Secretary on or before Monday, 16th November.(1)
In regards to the Mongredien prize it was arranged that the mode of displacing the pieces should be announced at twelve o'clock at the various clubs this day. The terms were—
1. Both Knights on the King's side, and both Bishops on the Queen's side.
2. King and King's Rook to change places, as also Queen and Queen's Rook.
3. King and King's Bishop to change places, as also Queen and Queen's Bishop. (2)
The last tournament of the set, the Mongredien Contest, was concluded last Tuesday by Mr M'Donnell, winning the final game of Mr Lord. Mr M'Donnell has therefore gained the first Glowworm prize, and the Mongredien prize also, each of the value of £21, and better worth the winning, perhaps, in proportion to the labour involved, than the Grand Challenge Cup itself. By thus coming out "double first," and that without losing a single game in either contest, Mr M'Donnell has fairly entitled himself to rank among the best, if not the best, of the English match and tournament players.
