"Since the conclusion of the brief and chance-medley matches a series of more decisive and interesting contests have been commenced by some of the leading combatants. Of these, one of the most important, between our countryman, Mr. Buckle, and the Hungarian, Löwenthal, has already terminated."(1)

"At the request of Mr. Buckle, who was compelled to leave town for the Continent, it was arranged that this match should be restricted to the best of seven games."(2)

This was one of the "set matches" arranged by the London (1851) Committee.
