"Another encounter of a livelier nature, between Mr. Bird and Mr. Horwitz will, it is expected, be finished this week, their score up to the time of our writing being—Bird 2, Horwitz 2, Drawn 3."(1)

"M. Horwitz who has been for some time contending for the mastery with Mr. Bird, has, we believe, at length succeeded in placing his seventh, and, therefore, concluding game upon the score."(2)

"Of the latest matches on the tapis, that between Messrs. Horwitz and Bird has ended, after a spirited struggle on the part of the younger player, in favour of the former, who scored at the conclusion 7 games to his opponent's 3, while 4 games were drawn."(3)

This was one of the "set matches" arranged by the London (1851) Committee.
