Philidorian Chess Rooms, London, England; Dec 1858—Feb 1860

Stake: "a moderate stake." (2)

"[...] in the match pending between two of the most promising young players, Mr. J. C. Campbell and Mr. R. B. Wormald. The first has already won a match against so distinguished an amateur as Mr. Barnes; and the second has successfully encountered some of the most eminent players of the day. We shall give the whole of the match, which is to be played at the Philidorian Chess Rooms." (1)

"[...] an interesting match now pending at Mr Starie's chess-rooms, in Rathbone-place, Oxford-street. The competitors in this case are Mr Wormald and Mr Campbell, both amateurs of tried skill in play, and of well-known ability in the problematic department of chess. The conditions of the match are simply a moderate stake, and that the winner of the first seven games is to be declared victor. This match proves closely contested and very interesting, the present score giving to Mr Campbell 3, Mr Wormald 3, and drawn 2." (2)

"The match between Messrs Campbell and Wormald is over, the former gentleman having gained 7 to his opponent's 4; draws 11 [sic]. We must not omit to mention that, in our opinion, the fine and spirited play of both these amateurs throughout this friendly and interesting match reflects the highest credit upon their abilities." (3)

"[...] the final score being—Campbell 7; Wormald 4; Drawn 10."(4)

Notes
The Chess Player's Chronicle for January 1859 was advertised on January 2nd, including mention of the the Campbell-Wormald game contained therein indicating that at least the first game of this match was played prior to January 1859. The game given in the Chess Player's Chronicle for July 1859, p198, was deduced to be game 14 based upon the match progress reports (see sources 5 through 15), color allocation, the game result, and the publication date in relation to the match progress reports, however, there is a possibility that this may be game 10. Some sources indicate the match ending with 11 draws, however with game 21 given as the concluding game this total would appear to be incorrect.
