Nepomniachtchi - Ding World Championship Match

Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Nepomniachtchi - Ding World Championship Match (2023)

The World Championship Match consists of 14 games. The player who scores 7.5 points or more wins the Match, and no further games are played. If the match was still tied after the 14 classical games were over, a rapid/blitz tiebreak would have decided the champion. Since the World Champion Magnus Carlsen officially declined to participate, the Match will be played between the two challengers, the winner of the 2022 Candidates Tournament, Ian Nepomniachtchi, and the runner-up, Ding Liren.

Name: FIDE World Chess Championship Event Date: April 07 - 30, 2023 Site: Astana, Kazakhstan Format: 14 rounds Classical Time control: 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 60 minutes for the next 20 moves and then 15 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 61.

Tie-break:
A match of four (4) games is played with a time control of 25 minutes + 10 seconds increment per move, starting from move 1. There is a drawing of lots to decide which player starts with white.
If the score is still level after the match, another match of two (2) games is played with a time control of 5 minutes + 3 seconds increment per move, starting from move 1. If the score is still level, another 2-game match is played with the same time control; this procedure may be repeated up to a total of five (5) 2-game matches.   MissScarlett: 12 days. The opening ceremony doesn't count.

When I heard that Dubov and Anand (with Irina Krush) were on the FIDE commentators' list, I doubted they would make a natural pairing, so I'm relieved to discover that Anand is scheduled for the first four games, before Dubov takes his seat (for how long I'm not sure).

Mar-30-23  Sally Simpson: Hi offramp: <10 days to the start. The two guys are cramming now.>

Looking at the classical game it's possible they will carry on with their private battle in reversed Sicilian set ups (ECO A20) with Ding Liren as White. Ding won this one; Ding Liren vs Nepomniachtchi, 2019

Nepo won this one; Ding Liren vs Nepomniachtchi, 2019

HeMateMe: live games with texted GM commentary on this site? Like, back in the good ol' days?

MissScarlett: How about Alejandro Ramirez? He's probably at a loose end right now.
Mar-31-23  AdolfoAugusto: Geoff, It seems the links for the two Ding Nepo games that you posted are the same, could you please update the second link?

HeMateMe: So...CG.com won't be putting up the money to have live games + commentary? Please, no Nigel Short but I'd love to have Yaz and Irina.

MissScarlett: Nigel would love to have Irina, too, one would imagine.
Apr-01-23  fabelhaft: When The Liberation Front takes over Carlsen, Kasparov and the Botez sisters will be hired.

HeMateMe: She'd rather spend an evening at a 24 hour trucking spot. I'd imagine.
Apr-01-23  offramp: Great news! Leonard Barden will be the special commentator for the first 8 games of the Nepo-Ding match. Leonard will be flying out this afternoon from Heathrow to Astana, KAZ.

I am pretty certain that Mr Barden won't be computer assisted.🤣😎

MissScarlett: Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's SuperBarden!
Apr-01-23  Sally Simpson: Leonard would be magnificent. He would slip into anecdote mode about the 50's and 60's like he has occasionally in the ECF forum and keep everyone entertained.

The moves would be appearing on the screen without comment as everyone would be held spellbound. Even Nepo and Ding would stop playing to listen to him.

Something like this on the background to the Penrose - Tal J Penrose vs Tal, 1960 (kibitz #60)

Teyss: <offramp: I am pretty certain that Mr Barden won't be computer assisted.> Well, his hearing aids do include microchips.

He will team with Aleksandar Matanovic. Apparently Geoff Chandler will join later on.

Apr-01-23  whiteshark: Daniel ♔ previews the World Championship 2023. In this first part he focuses on the play of Ian Nepomniachtchi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FG... (~14m46s) ENJOY!

theagenbiteofinwit: After this match, it will be the first time since 1948 that a World Chess Champion did not face Viktor Korchnoi in classical chess.

In that run, Anand and Kramnik are the only two champions who weren't defeated by Korchnoi.

Joshka: What a pathetic website, good Lord. They bury this farce in a country only two out of a hundred folks could even point out on a map. Is this the end of World Championship Chess??

Joshka: So what was the complaint from World Champion Carlson about why he has decided against participation??

MissScarlett: Updated with the correct FIDE link - to the 2023 match, not the 2023-24 cycle.

Apr-01-23  Refused: I invented the character of Joshka and uneducated far right pseudo Christian back in 1969. It was original intended as comic relief, and to hold a mirror to the face of Americans about the side of them they didn't want to see. I admit, that the character goes a bit over top from time to time, but that's the entire point of satire.

Larry Flint wrote about Jerry Falwell having sexual intercourse with his mother. I made up that Joshka character, who claims to be a Christian, but does very little to live life as Christ and prefers to engage in bigotry and idolatry.

<A country only only two percent could point out on a map> was meant as an indictment of American education.

But here we are, life imitating art; in a very sad way.

Joshka: <Refused> We are on a World Chess Championship page, and all you want to chat about are folks having sexual intercourse, porn mag writer Larry Flint, you want to talk about the American educational system!!LOL This is right up your alley, children fighting with their teachers/they now want to be able to have children 12 years of age get sex change information and surgery without informing their own parents!!!LOL You for all that?? or do you REFUSE to buy into that crap?? Let's stick to the subject on this page!!
Apr-01-23  Refused: Like I said, I think I went over the top with that creation of mine.

I think I have become sorta of Dr. Frankenstein of Internet charactes.

Apr-01-23  Sally Simpson: Hi Teyss,

Myself, Aleksandar and Leonard checked into our Astana hotel a few days ago. We are sharing the same room and have been given a triple bunk bed. However, the three of us are sharing the bottom bunk as none us can climb up the ladder to the higher bunks.

The hotel maid has refused to clean or re-enter our room. The sight of three sets of false teeth in glass tumblers in the morning sent her into hysterics.

Later a brief tour of the city ended up with the three us getting hopelessly lost and collectively forgetting the name of our hotel. The hotel sent out a search party and we were finally delivered back to their door 10 hours later by the Kazakhstan police.

A rather polite but shifty looking young man had been trying to introduce himself to us but we kept avoiding him because he looked like a timeshare salesman. "No thank you." we shouted every time he approached us. Turns out it was David Howell.

More next time, wish you were here (as I write this Leonard is stuffing a hotel bathrobe into is suitcase. Apparently it's to add to his Olympiad collection of bathrobes.)
