Synopsis
Since the Lasker-Steinitz chess match noting of so much interest in Montreal chess circles has occurred to equal that taken in the match between N. Jasnogrodsky, the Russian chess expert, and F. J. Marshall, the junior champion of Brooklyn, N. Y., which was begun at the new chess divan, 64 Cathcart street, last evening.
The match is for a suitable prize, and the majority of games out of seven must be won by either player to obtain the prize. The committee met prior to the match, and it was agreed as follows:—The match to be seven games. The winner of the majority of games gets the prize. Draws count half a point. Games to be played on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from 8 to 12 p.m. Adjourned games to be played the following afternoon at 3. Laws of the sixth American Congress to govern. Referees: Mr. G. W. Liddell and Mr. Lamere, whose decision will be final. The above rules were agreed to by the players and the committee, and Mr. Liddell and Mr. Lamere drew for first move. The former drew white for Jasnogrodsky, who made his move at 8.45. At 12.45 time was called, when the position was taken down, and Marshall gave a sealed move to the referees.
