World Cup (Women) (2000)

The 2000 FIDE Women's World Cup was a 24-player tournament held from 1-13 September in Shenyang, China. The tournament was not part of any World Championship cycle. The participants were first divided into four 6-player round-robin groups (1-5 September), from which the two best players advanced to an 8-player knockout (7-13 September). Rest days: September 6 and 11. The prize fund was US $168,000. Games started at 2 pm. Chief arbiter: Ignatius Leong.

The playoff (two 15+10 Rapid games and sudden death Blitz games if necessary) took place soon after Round 5. Wang Pin - Kanying Qin 1-1, Kanying Qin - Skripchenko 1½-½, and Wang Pin - Skripchenko 2-0 (2nd game was forfeited) resolved the 3-way tie in favor of Wang Pin and Kanying Pin. Cramling qualified by 1½-½ against Khurtsidze, and Hoang Thanh Trang beat Zhukova 1½-½ in two games for the quarterfinal pairings. Then after a rest day the top two players in each group played a knockout tournament, each match consisting of two Classical games. If 1-1, then two Rapid tiebreak games, and if still equal, individual sudden death Blitz games until there was a win (a draw did not count as a win for Black):

Yuhua Xu pleased the home fans by beating Natalia Zhukova in the final. She took home the first prize of US $30,000.
