Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
European Championship (Women) (2005)

The 6th European Women's Championship was a 163-player 12-round Swiss tournament in Chisinau, Moldova, 11-24 June 2005, with a rest day on 19 June (after Round 8) and a day for playoffs on 24 June. It was organized by the Chess Federation of Moldova under the aegis of the European Chess Union. The first 18 players would qualify for the World Championship tournament next year. Time control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 15 more minutes for the whole game, with 30 seconds added per move from move 1. If players were tied for medals or qualifying places, the ties would be broken by a knockout system, each match consisting of two Rapid games (15 min + 10 sec) and if necessary two Blitz games (5 min + 2 sec) and an Armageddon game. Prize fund: $44,000 (minus FIDE & ECU taxes). Tournament director: Feodor Skripchenko. Chief arbiter: Werner Stubenvoll. Number of games played: 972 Classical + 28 Rapid + 14 Blitz + 4 Armageddon = 1018.

Kateryna Lagno (aged 15) beat Kosintseva in the tiebreak match for 1st place. Yelena Dembo beat Alexieva (Collas) and Zaiatz in the matches for 3rd place. There were also tiebreak matches for World Championship qualification between 12 of the 16 players with 7.5/12, from which Skripchenko, Ushenina and Bojkovic qualified. After the playoffs, 26 players including eight pre-qualified players were ready for participation in the Women's World Championship Knockout Tournament (2006). Tiebreak games: 6th EU-ChW playoffs (2005).

chessgames.com: Crafty is analyzing J Kochetkova vs D Hamelink, 2005 because of an interesting sacrifice. He should have something to say about it soon.
