Reykjavik Open (2002)

The 20th Reykjavik Open was held in the City Hall of Reykjavik, Iceland, 7-15 March 2002. A 72-player 9-round Swiss tournament, it was organized by the Icelandic Chess Federation and the Reykjavik Chess Club. Time control: 100 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 50 more minutes for the next 20 moves, then 10 more minutes to the end of the game, with 30 seconds added per move from move 1. Rounds 1-8 started at 5 pm, round 9 at 1 pm. Prize fund: 7,000 USD. First prize 2,500 USD, 2nd prize 2,000 USD, 3rd price 1,250 USD. Tournament director: Hrannar Arnarsson. Chief arbiter: Rikhardur Sveinsson. Number of games played: 322.
