The 11th European Championship was an 11-round Swiss held in the Center Zamet sports hall in Rijeka, Croatia, 6-18 March 2010, with a rest day on 13 March and a day for playoffs on 18 March. It was organized by the Rijeka chess club and the Croatian Chess Federation, under the auspices of the City of Rijeka and the European Chess Union. A total of 406 players participated, including 186 GM's and 76 IM's. The first 22 players would qualify for the World Cup (2011). Time control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves and 30 more minutes for the rest of the game, with 30 seconds added per move from move 1. Prize fund: 120,000 euros. First prize 20,000, 2nd prize 15,000, 3rd prize 11,000 euros. Tournament director: Damir Vrhovnik. Chief arbiter: Mladen Bratosevic. Play began each day at 3:30 pm. Number of games played: 2191 Classical, 36 Rapid, 14 Blitz and 5 Armageddon = 2246. Ian Nepomniachtchi won with 9/11. Jobava beat Timofeev in the playoff match for silver medal. Adding to the players with 8 points or more, the playoff matches for World Cup participation qualified 13 players the World Cup (2011). The playoff matches consisted of two Rapid (15 min + 10 sec) games, then if necessary two Blitz (5 min + 2 sec) games, and an Armageddon game (5 vs 4 min). See 11th Eu-ch playoff (2010).

I'm guessing the bottom 12 on tiebreaks will be paired to reduce the field to 24, and then the 24 will be paired up to get to 12. We'll have to find out tomorrow though! |

<Tie-break Matches
In the European Individual Chess Championship tie-breaks are organized only in the following cases: a) to establish the Champion;
b) to establish the medal winners;
c) to establish qualifiers, for the World Chess Championship. In case of a) and b) the relevant tie-break matches will decide the final ranking and the money prizes connected with these places. In the case of c), the relevant tie-break matches will not influence the final ranking and the money prizes will be shared equally. System of the Tie-break matches:
Additional matches of two games will be played with 15 minutes on the clock and addition of 10 seconds before each move.
If this match is drawn again, then two games will be played with five minutes plus two seconds per move.
If this match is again drawn, then the sudden-death game will be played with white having 5 minutes on the clock and black having 4 minutes, without any addition. White has to win the sudden-death game in order to win the match.
In case that more than three tie-break rounds have to be played, the Chief-Arbiter – after confirmation by the ECU President or his representative – may change the playing schedule in such a way that the tie-break matches can be finished within one day. Detailed Tournament Regulations for the tie-break matches and the time schedule will be announced on Wednesday, 17 March at 22.30 at the Technical Meeting for tie breaks. 6. QUALIFIERS
The 11th Individual European Chess Championship for men and women is qualification event for the next World Cup. According to FIDE regulations and the decision of the ECU Board, 22 players will qualify.> |
