HeMateMe: Any Americans in the men's group? I don't recognize any names, but some of the Russian or Ukranian names could be American kids born to parents from Asia.
Aug-13-10  rapidcitychess: How many rounds are there?

ajk68: Too bad Carlsen isn't playing here. I guess a freak loss might cost him too much on his rating. Maybe he has another tournament coming up?
Aug-13-10  TheFocus: <ajk68> Why would Carlsen even need to play here? The World Junior Championship is beneath his level.

Bobby Fischer also did not play in the World Junior Championship, even though he would have probably won it too. Instead, William Lombardy went in 1957 and won it. Bobby also did not play in the Junior (or Student) Team Championships.

Aug-14-10  Udit Narayan: Carlsen is #1 rated on fide ratings list, he is concentrating now on world championship...if he is best player in world, will he not also automatically be best junior player?

It is like asking why Topalov doesn't play Bulgarian championship or Anand not Indian championship? Or why Polgar does not play womens only events?

HeMateMe: I thought maybe at age 15 or 16 Carlsen might have played in the World Juniors. I'm sure he would have qualified. He was probably in the top 50 at that age, but no reason to not play in a tournament with other talented teens.

Spassky, Karpov and Kasparov were all World Junior Champions. Pretty good company.

Aug-14-10  percyblakeney: <some of the Russian or Ukranian names could be American kids born to parents from Asia>

Or from Europe, since 80 percent of Russia's population (and 100 percent of Ukraine's) live in Europe.

Aug-14-10  percyblakeney: The only player from USA in the field is apparently Marc Tyler Arnold
Aug-14-10  DeltaHawk: 1990 the magic birth year!
Aug-14-10  nummerzwei: <rapidcitychess: How many rounds are there?>

It's a 13 round Swiss.

  whiteshark: The roaring twenties.
Aug-14-10  Inf: Yay! Finally they put the games from the World Junior Championship! GREAT to see Emilio Cordoba in second place with chaces to be World Champion!

As a Peruvian, I'm more than rooting for him!

Go Emilio!

Well, then I'm headed for Ukraine. Should be some cheap apartments to be had.

Aug-14-10  percyblakeney: Sjugirov won and is 0.5 behind Andreikin with two rounds to go. I've never heard of Blomqvist in third but he's doing well considering the rating difference, with his 2407 he is far behind the top two (2650 and 2610).
Aug-15-10  Harvestman: Negi has reached a position after move 11 that he could have achieved in 6 moves. Is that just 5 tempi down, or is there some grand strategic idea here, along the lines of getting your opponent over-stretched.
Aug-15-10  Harvestman: Scratch that, 7 moves, not 6. And he is a pawn up. Still, 4 tempi for a pawn...
Aug-15-10  percyblakeney: Sjugirov won against Blomqvist and caught up with Andreikin who settled for an eight-move draw with white.
Aug-15-10  Rolfo: Look at Jorge Cori, seven wins, five losses, no draws
Aug-15-10  notyetagm: Excellent endgame play in an opp-colored bishop endgame by Sjugirov today at W Jr Ch.

A **huge** win which ties him for first with Andreikin with 1 round to go.

Go Sjugirov!

<percyblakeney: Sjugirov won against Blomqvist and caught up with Andreikin who settled for an eight-move draw with white.>

Andreikin may regret not having tried to win a valuable White game late in this tournament. Hopefully he does.

Aug-15-10  Rolfo: .. and his sister Deysi Estela Cori Tello, eight wins, four losse and no draws :)
Aug-15-10  percyblakeney: Last round:

Hammer - Andreikin
Salem - Sjugirov

Aug-15-10  notyetagm: Here we go, <ROUND 13 PAIRINGS>, top three boards only:

http://www.chessarbiter.to.pl/turni...

Hammer (8.5) vs Andreikin (9.5)

Salem (8.5) vs Sugirov (9.5)

Matlakov (8.5) vs Negi (8.0)

Aug-15-10  percyblakeney: Andreikin is one of all the players born in 1990, Sjugirov is considerably younger (born in 1993).
