cro777: Gros Xake Taldea (2682 average elo rating) is the defending champion. The team of San Sebastian won the top league of the 2011 Spanish Team Championship, in the same year that the local chess scene celebrated the 100th anniversary of the famous San Sebastian 1911 tournament.

On top boards for Gros Xake Taldea are playing Ponomariov, Bacrot, Kasimdzhanov and Van Wely.

cro777: Shirov switched back to Latvia. He actively collaborates with the Latvian Chess Federation. At the Istanbul 2012 World Chess Olympiad, he represented Latvia for the first time.

Last year he helped his team Gros Xake Taldea to victory in the Spanish Team Championship 2011.

cro777: In Round 5 (on Friday, November 9), in one of decisive matches, the leader Sestao Naturgas Energia (with perfect score after four rounds) meets the reigning champion Gros Xake-Taldea.

Top pairings:

GM DOMINGUEZ PEREZ, Leinier (2726) - GM PONOMARIOV, Ruslan (2741)

GM VACHIER-LAGRAVE, Maxime (2711) - GM VAN WELY, Loek (2691)

GM GIRI, Anish (2715) - GM BAUER, Christian (2639)

The question is, can anybody stop Sestao Naturgas Energia? (Y la pregunta que se hacen muchos es ¿ parará alguien al Sestao Naturgas Energia?)

Nov-09-12  Atking: Is there a site which able to see the game in live?
Nov-09-12  bachiller: According to their names, only one out of six players cited by cro777 seems to be Spaniard: GM Dominguez Perez. But indeed he is not, since Spain lost Cuba in 1898, well before Dominguez was born.

It seems to me that Spanish teams are full of non-spaniard players. A consequence on the Bosman ruling, that goes far beyond the soccer.

cro777: It seems that the chess club Sestao Naturgas Energia is unstoppable. In Round 5, the team of Sestao defeated the reigning champion Gros Xake-Taldea.

On top boards, Domingez Perez and Giri won against Ponomariov and Bauer. The game Van Wely - Vachier Lagrave ended in a draw.

Nice endgame play by Giri against Christian Bauer.

cro777: CECLUB (Campeonato de España de Clubes) - Division de Honor

The team of Sestao convincingly won the 2012 Spanish Team Championship in Leon. Playing for the winner, Domingez Perez (5/7) and Giri (5/6) achieved the best individual results in the championship on Board 1 and Board 3 respectively. On Board 2 Vachier Lagrave scored 4/6.

Final standings (Match points, Game points):

1. Sestao Naturgas Energia 13 (28.5)

2. C.A. Solvay 10 (26.0)

3. C.A. Reverté Albox 8 (22.5)

4. Linex-Magic Extremadura 8 (19.5)

5. Equigoma Casa Social Catolica 6 (20.0)

6. Gros Xake-Taldea 5 (18.5)

7. C.E. Foment Martinenc 3 (16.5)

8. C.E. Barcelona Uga 3 (16.5)

Nov-12-12  Nicocobas: <cro777> <or anyone else> The final standings in the Spanish Team Competition tournament raised some questions in my mind about the vagaries of quantification in chess. Not long ago we had a spirited discussion on the ELO index. What about final competition standings? For example, Delchev finished in a tie for first place while Leinier ended in a three-way tie for second. However, Delchev’s average opponent had an ELO of 2545, whereas Leinier faced players whose average ELO was 2646. (Incidentally, the 101 point difference is statistically significant.) Granted, Leinier lost one game while Alexander was undefeated; still, I wonder if quantification difficulties in chess might not extend to other areas such as tournament results.
Nov-13-12  waustad: <nico>Some tournaments have gone to performance rating to select board prizes. Kramnik playing 2700+ opposition every round after the second is different from the experience of somebody strong who is the only good player on a weak team. Facing the top player from the Seyshelles is rather different from facing Aronian. I think that the olympiad did that this year. If I'm wrong, it isn't the first time.

cro777: <Nicocobas: The final standings in the Spanish Team Competition tournament raised some questions>

As <waustad> pointed out, some tournaments have gone to performance rating to select board prizes.

According to performance rating, best players are:

Delchev 2854

Giri 2852

Dominguez Perez 2804

That would be my assessment too.

Nov-13-12  Nicocobas: <waustad> and <cro777> Thanks for the information. After reading about it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_ra...) I can see the merits of performance rating as a criterion for awarding board prizes.
Nov-13-12  Nicocobas: <cro777> Are player performance ratings for this tournament available online?

cro777: The best individual result in the championship achieved Bulgarian GM Aleksander Delchev (2587) playing for the runner-up C.A. Solvay on board 3. Delchev scored 6/7 (5 wins and 2 draws) with the performance rating of 2854, earning 21.3 elo points.

Interestingly, in the last round Delchev won a theoretically drawn endgame against Armenian GM Ter-Sahakyan (2580).

Delchev - Ter Sahakyan. Position after 87.Re8

click for larger view

In the diagram position only 87...Ra6 leads to a draw. Ter Sahakyan went astray by playing 87...Ra1? and lost the game. (Theoretically, after 87...Ra1 White wins in 24 moves).

Delchev vs S Ter-Sahakyan, 2012

Delchev is the author of two books on opening theory: "The Safest Sicilian" (with Semko Semkov) and "The Safest Grunfeld" (with Evgenij Agrest).

cro777: Leinier Dominguez-Perez (5/7 on board 1) and Anish Giri (5/6 on board 3) were in excellent shape as well.

"Our team, Sestao Naturgas (from the city close to Bilbao) was clearly the favorite this year, with Dominguez, Vachier-Lagrave, Romain Edourad and Laurent Fressinet (the new player in the team, who was asked to complete the French trio for this season) and the Spanish players- Del Rio Angelis, Alfonso Romero, Mario Gomez and the fierce supporter Sergio Trigo. Our last year's nemesis Gros Xake Taldea lost some of its strength once Alexei Shirov left Spain, but still there were enough rivals for us and we never expected an easy life.

In team competition it's often important to have a strong leader and Leiner was one, beating a player after player with all kinds of colors. Already last year I noticed that Leiner was in the excellent shape in Spain.

I must be honest that I already started to miss those days when I was happy to look at the tournament table. At a very unexpected moment (right after my first school exam period was finished), our Spanish team won the National title and I managed to contribute on board three, with a sweet score of 5 out of 6." (Anish Giri)
