Jan-12-16  zanzibar: RE: missing Blackburne // Mason game:

<Even tournament books can be unreliable sources. The game that Blackburne lost to James Mason at Hamburg in 1885 is not in the book of the 4th German Federation Congress; the editors included a Blackburne win from another tournament by mistake. The correct game is still being sought.>

Apr-24-16  zanzibar: From the intro:

<Gunsberg proved himself here and later that he was one of the best chess players in the world in the 19th century>

Seems a bit too much of a claim. See here:

No Gunsberg.

Maybe it the claim were restricted a little to less than the entire 18th century:

Apr-24-16  zanzibar: Concerning the supposedly misattributed Mason--Blackburne game referred to in the 1st comment...

I'm curious, why didn't Harding say what tournament the game given in the Hamburg TB really belonged to?

Does anybody know?

And, given that the game presumably reflects a Mason--Blackburne encounter, if we don't know its proper attribution, what do we do with it?

Apr-25-16  zanzibar: Strike the above question, <Tab> answered it here:

Blackburne vs J Mason, 1885 (kibitz #7)

The game originally published in the <Hamburg (1885)> has the colors right, but the wrong result, since it belonged to the <Hereford (1885)> tournament. According to Harding, the only other complete source is <C-M v7 p40-41>. The Field also published the finish.

Still, I think Harding might include the above on the webpage, in addition to his Blackburne book.
