Jan-26-13 | | iamsheaf: It's a bit surprising that the group A score of Carlsen is higher than the score of Group B leader...normally you expect Groups B and C to have more decisive games |
Jan-26-13 | | Jim Bartle: Group B does have more decisive games. It's just that nobody is undefeated or has put up a really big score, plus Carlsen has. |
Jan-26-13
 | | Penguincw: Looks like Ernst finally earned his first draw, Round 12. |
Jan-26-13 | | IndigoViolet: Go Richie Rapport! I want to see him in next year's A group. I believe a victory over Nikolic tomorrow would assure him of first place on tiebreak. |
Jan-26-13 | | Eyal: <first place on tiebreak> In recent years, when two players shared first place in the B group, both were invited to the A group next year - Motylev & Carlsen in 2006, McShane & Navara in 2011 (though McShane eventually declined the invitation). So I won't be surprised if something like that happens this time as well (but three players would probably be too much...) |
Jan-26-13
 | | Penguincw: We could have as many as 5 players earning first (prior to tiebreaks), if this happens tomorrow: Dubov - Van Kampen 1-0
Smeets - Turov 1/2-1/2
Grandelius - Tiviakov (doesn't really matter what the result is)
Ipatov - Movsesian 1-0
Naiditsch - Ernst 0-1
Timman - Edouard (doesn't really matter what the result is) Nikolic - Rapport 1-0 |
Jan-26-13 | | Refused: Unlikely to happen though.
Naiditsch has white and will push for a win against Ernst.
Movsesian needs to push for a win with the black pieces against Ipatov.
So I expect Naiditsch to win Wijk B, this year. |
Jan-27-13 | | moppa: I noticed that Naiditsch (with +4) has earned 18,6 live rating points. I wonder why Movsesian (2688, also with +4) isn't on the live rating list. Is it possible he has earned less than 12 points? |
Jan-27-13 | | Eyal: <I noticed that Naiditsch (with +4) has earned 18,6 live rating points. I wonder why Movsesian (2688, also with +4) isn't on the live rating list. Is it possible he has earned less than 12 points?> Most of Naiditsch's live rating points are from Bundesliga games (http://www.2700chess.com/glass.php?...) - he gained only about 5 points so far from the Group B games. |
Jan-27-13 | | Refused: ouch, Nikolic found the auto-destruct function against Rapport. Assuming Rapport finds the win he will be sole leader with 9/13, and thus putting Naiditsch and Movsesian under maximum pressure. |
Jan-27-13
 | | Penguincw: ♔ LIVE UPDATE ♔
Naiditsch-Ernst (0.00)
Nikolic-Rapport (-5.29)
Ipatov-Movsesian (-0.12)
Smeets-Turov (2.02)
Dubov-Van Kampen 1/2-1/2 |
Jan-27-13 | | NyP: Rapport played for the win from the beginning with black against a 2600+ GM. |
Jan-27-13 | | Jason Frost: Rapport has to play a bit of a king walk to get to safety, but plenty of time ... would expect Nicolic to resign in a few moves. Naidtisch - Ernst should be a dead draw, assuming neither player gets fancy. Ipatov - Movsesian seems to be heading the same way in an equal 2R+N+A lot of pawns ending (1 clear passer for both). |
Jan-27-13 | | achieve: I hope it's not premature to say that Rapport will be in next year's A-group, and one of the youngest to do so, I think. What an achievement would that be. |
Jan-27-13 | | Jason Frost: Now official Nikolic - Rapport <0-1> |
Jan-27-13 | | Jason Frost: Smeets beat Turov in a classic endgame
click for larger viewwhich managed to confuse Crafty into never-ending checks (white will just get his eventual passed c pawn to c6 and then it's zugzwang) to briefly make it to a possible tie for first, before Rapport jumped half a point ahead with his own win. |
Jan-27-13 | | Refused: Wow, Ernst made the mistake in the ending with 67...Qg4+ (67...Qg3+ was the correct move)
Now, Naiditsch has a difficult but won endgame. |
Jan-27-13 | | Jason Frost: Still very complicated, the probably more critical error was not playing 46...Kd6 in the following position and just shaking hands (not to mention the strange 44...Ke5) click for larger view |
Jan-27-13 | | Refused: Still 67...Qg3+ was still a tablebase draw. While 67...Qg4+ sent Ernst down the losing path.
Naiditsch still has to play precise to get the full point, but at least he has it in his own hands. 46...Kd6 looked of course like an easier path to a draw. |
Jan-27-13 | | fisayo123: So Rapport ties Carlsen's 2006 score 9/13 at 16. Very impressive! |
Jan-27-13 | | Jason Frost: http://www.tatasteelchess.com/tourn... <Tied for first, but losing the fight for the right to participate in Group A on tie-break is Richard Rapport> Strange decision if they in fact decide not to invite Rapport as well. |
Jan-27-13 | | Eyal: Looks like there's a good chance both co-winners will be playing in the A Group next year, as I thought - according to what the tournament director, Jeroen van den Berg, says with regard to Rapport in the final press conference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1Dm... (from about 7:05 to 7:17). |
Jan-28-13 | | Kikoman: Congratulations GM Richard Rapport and GM Arkadi Naiditsch! ^^ |
Feb-01-13 | | kardopov: I'm surprised to see Timman performing better than some of the computer tutored upcoming youngsters. Timman's placing could indicate that he can wipe out this field while in his younger years. |
Feb-01-13 | | Refused: <kardopov: I'm surprised to see Timman performing better than some of the computer tutored upcoming youngsters. Timman's placing could indicate that he can wipe out this field while in his younger years.> Depends. Timman was the best westerner for some years. So it is possible that he might have been able to beat them when he was in his best years. On the other hand, this seems to have been one of the tournament, Timman stayed away from the good red wine. Bare in mind, in the late 80s early 90s there was a joke among professionals.
<I have to play Timman tomorrow...>
<Jan Timman or red wine Timman?> So that's another thing Timman was (in)famous for. |
