58th US Open (1957)

<1957 US Open
Cleveland, Ohio
August 5-17, 1957>

At the time, the big story of this tournament was the triumph of 14-year-old Bobby Fischer. Forgotten is another tiebreak controversy, possibly even worse than the 1955 near fiasco between Rossolimo and Reshevsky. Arthur Bisguier was originally proclaimed the winner, and was driving back to New York with the first place trophy before a recalculation gave the title to Fischer instead. Bisguier later wrote an article for Chess Review (October 1957, pp. 297-298) in which he did his best to be sportmanslike and praise Fischer copiously, but his bitterness with the tournament officials and tiebreaking systems in general was apparent.

Another first in this tournament was the initial appearance at the US Open of Jerry Hanken. Anybody who knew Jerry was not allowed to forget this.

But you want a real piece of irony? Hanken's first round opponent was Anthony Santasiere, who held the record at that time for most US Opens played in.

-----

Of course, there was another story or two. The event drew 175 players from 23 states, the District of Columbia, Mexico, and Canada. A player from the last of these could have been the 176th, but he didn't show and missed a chance he no doubt later regretted to beat up on Fischer in round 1.

1953 US Open Champion Donald Byrne held the lead until losing to Fischer in round 9 and dropping into a tie with brother Robert. He overtook Fischer the next round, with Robert Byrne and Bisguier a half-point behind.

Both leaders won in round 11, Byrne defeating his brother in the process. Bisguier remained in position a half-point behind, and took his chance to beat Byrne in round 12 and finish tied with Fischer, who drew with Walter Shipman.

The event was directed, as was becoming customary, by Georges Koltanowski.

-----

The crosstable published in the Chess Life issue of September 20, 1957, contained a large number of errors and gaps. This reconstruction in based largely on work done by <TheFocus>, who accounted for the major problems and probably saved what little hair I have left. I have fixed a few minor remaining errors and made one larger revision to account for the pairings in some known games. And if anyone knows who the mysterious player #167 is, we would both thank you heartily!

Note: in the following crosstable, a series of dashes (<---->) indicates an unpaired game, usually due to withdrawal. (<+>) and (<->) indicate forfeit wins and losses. (<Bye>) is a full-point bye assigned by the director, normally due to having an odd number of players.

Jan-11-17  Helios727: Did Bobby's first opponent lose by default? Or how do you make sense out of the conflicting numbers, and the fact that the top scoreboard shows Bisguier with a score of 10 and Bobby with 9? Yet Bobby won on a tiebreaker?

Tabanus: Plain Dealer, 7 Aug. 1957 p. 7: In results of rd. 2 we find "Adam Smith, Butte, Mont., 1; <Mena Schwartz>, Cleveland, 0.

Plain Dealer, 11 Aug. 1957 p. 12-C: In results of rd. 5 we find "John Ishkan, Fairfield, Conn., 1, <Mena Schwartz>, Cleveland, 0.

So no. 167 is Mena Schwartz.

Phony Benoni: <Helios727> Yes, Fischer won his first game by forfeit. The crosstable uses "+ and "=" to indicate wins and losses on forfeit/.

The scoreboard at the top is automatically compiled from actual games in the database. That's why Fischer comes up a game short. Since many games are not available, most players in the scoreboard have less than 12 games listed.

<Tabanus> Thanks; I'll fix things u tonight. Unfortunately, it looks like I don't have access to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, which is a pity. The crosstable in "Chess LIfe" was a mess -- that's where <Unknown layer> game from in the first place -- and I'd welcome any information to double check it.

Tabanus: <PB> Vincent Hayward - Mena Schwartz 1-0 in rd. 11 also confirmed in Plain Dealer 16 Aug p. 5. There may be more: for most of the rounds, results are given for the leaders + most of the Cleveland players. I find no crosstable in the end.

Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, 17 Aug 1957, p. 1:

<Young Chess Master Shows Judges Wrong>

<Cleveland, Ohio - AP - When tournament directors Friday night declared defending champion Arthur B. Bisguier, 26, of New York the winner of the United States Chess federation's open tournament, 14 year old Bobby Fischer protested that there had been a mistake in the scoring.
Tournament officials spent an hour checking the complicated scoring system and then discovered that they had awarded Bisguier too many points. They reversed their decision and declared Fischer the new open champion. He is the youngest player ever to win the tournament.
Fischer and Bisguier, who was dropped into second place, split the top prize of S 1,500 under tournament rules.>

Cleveland Plain Dealer, 17 Aug 1957, p. 1:

<Brooklyn Boy, 14, Wins Chess Championship>

<By Emerson L. Batdorff
A 14-year-old-boy from Brooklyn, N.Y., last night won the annual United States open chess tournament here. He is the youngest winner on record.
With his crew cut hair and boyish clothing, Bobby Fischer, the champ, looked more like a fugitive from the Soap Box Derby than the chess expert he is.
Bobby didn't have much to say after his victory was announced. He had made his remarks previously, and shed a few hot tears, after a 26-year-old New Yorker was announced the winner.
Chess is an odd game in that during tournaments no one knows for sure who has won until quite a while after the last checkmate. A quick tally of the scores by the tournament committee showed that Arthur B. Bisguier, 1956 open champion, had done it again.

Bobby Complains
Bobby complained to tournament director George Koltanowski: "I played tougher players than he did!" This argument did not checkmate Koltanowski. But shortly a whiz on rules declared that Bobby had played two persons who subsequently dropped out of the tournament.
A runner was dispatched for the nearest copy of the Official Blue Book and Encyclopedia of Chess. Sure enough, this was the case and Bobby was announced the winner.
Koltanowski made the revised announcement over the public address system in the absence of Bisguier. He urged that the news be broken to the dethroned champion. Bisguier proved to be in a telephone booth calling New York with what he thought was good news.
Pandemonium did not reign among the 150 chess enthusiasts in response to either announcement, chess not being that sort of game.
Polite and appreciative applause was what the first champion got and the same was accorded to his successor. There was no whistling or stamping of feet as some contestants were still playing.>

Imagine being that no-show opponent, and finding out later (perhaps a few years later) that you missed your opportunity to play Fischer. Bummer!

Dennis Waterman, whom I know from the poker circuit, lost an opportunity to face off with Wesley So when the latter failed to appear in an event, last year or the year before.
