Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Hastings 1968/69

The 44th Hastings Christmas Chess Festival was held December 28th - January 8th. The field expanded this year and twelve grandmasters and masters were invited to compete in a round robin format at the premier event. The notable participants of this edition included former world champion and previous Hastings winner Vasily Smyslov, five time Hastings winner Svetozar Gligoric, and an assortment of promising junior masters including Robert Hübner, Raymond Keene, Jan Smejkal, and Vladimir Tukmakov. As it stood, experience beat out youth as Smyslov won his second Hastings tournament, this time as clear first with +6 at the final. He edged out Gligoric, who finished with +5 undefeated, by half a point.
