The USSR vs. USA radio chess match in 1945 was conducted from September 1 to September 4. The ten leading masters of the United States played the ten leading masters of the Soviet Union (except for Paul Keres). Each player faced his opponent in two games.
The time control was the then-standard 40 moves in 2.5 hours and 16 moves per hour thereafter. Using the Uedemann Code, it took an average of five minutes to transmit a move.
The USA team played at the Henry Hudson Hotel in New York. The Soviet team met at the Central Club of Art Masters in Moscow. The USSR team won the match 15½–4½.
This result surprised the chess world, and presaged their dominance in world chess for over four decades to come.
