PhilFeeley: Okay, I'm confused (although it may be a trivial matter).

Chessbomb says Kurt Meier's last round game was a draw. Chess-results and here on say he won.

If you look at the game on chessbomb, it's a draw. So who's right?

Premium Chessgames Member
  Sally Simpson: Hi Phil,

I cannot get onto Chessbomb but in the same final round where Kurt won there is a German lad called Georg Meier who drew his last round game. Maybe the mix up is there.

Very sad news. My sympathy to both families concerned.

Aug-15-14  Refused: looking at the game, the position was clearly not winning for Meier (white)

Final position black to move.

Black has a forced draw with c6 and the idea b5.
Most logical line I see.
67.Kd2 b5
68.axb5 cxb5
69.Bxb5 Draw.

Aug-15-14  amitjoshi79: congratulation to indian team great gift to the nation on independance the country which invented chess

Aug-16-14  ex0duz: <Congratulations to our team on winning the gold medal! What a splendid feat by these wondrous guys and also very well deserved!

And last night I saw a photo here that quite misted my is a photo of Wang Yue and Ni Hua embracing tightly, shedding overwhelmed tears of happiness on each other's shoulders.Indeed the two veterans have made our team so stable in this almost cruise to the victory, and from their tears I know that they have waited so long for this day, after winning the second places here and there before. And also the younger generation,Ding Liren,Yu Yangyi and Wei Yi,they have simply been winning many crucial games all along, splendid performance...Nothing else to say but so proud of them! And also the coaches and the former generations of chess people in China and so on...Congratulations to all of them, the Olympiad Champion this year!>

Do you have a link to that photo? Where did you see that photo, is there an accompanying article or interviews with the chinese players/team?

Aug-16-14  Rama: ChessBase has an article detailing the (many) others who also "died with their boots on." Never knew that.
Aug-16-14  dangerhump: <ex0dus> I don't have a link but I know Susan Polgar tweeted it on the last day of the Olympiad so you should be able to find it there

Aug-16-14  waustad: <Riverbeast: China came close to doing that....The Russian women fended them off this time, but four years from now who knows?> They play the chess olympiad every 2 years. Here is an enormous amount of information on team play:

cro777: "FIDE regrets to announce the deaths of Olympiad players Kurt Meier and Alisher Anarkulov in Tromso on 14th August. FIDE offers its condolences to their families and friends."

Kurt Meier aged 67, originally from Switzerland, played on board 2 for the Seychelles team. His son Peter played on board 1 and his wife Flora (a Seychellois national) played in the Women section.

Alisher Anarkulov aged 46 from Uzbekistan played on Board 4 for the International Chess Committee of the Deaf (ICCD) team. He was vice world champion among athletes with disabilities of hearing.

Aug-16-14  waustad: <ketchuplover: Bahamas ended 40 places above its seeding> Having an unrated player on board one who actually scores soemthing will do that. He beat an 1845 player and in the last 3 rounds got 2/3 against three players rated over 2000. We always need to remember that unrated doesn't necessarily mean guppy.

Sokrates: Congratulations to China. A colossal achievement and, as said, a fine result considering China's history in world chess. India's result is also remarkable, whereas it's no surprise that countries from the old Soviet Union are that good. Nevertheless, it's also worth noting that even the highest rated Chinese player (Ding Liren) is only no. 15 on the live rating list. So it's not because they have the highest rated players, but rather the most homogenetic team. Well done.
Aug-17-14  Dr. Overlord: <Sokrates So it's not because they have the highest rated players, but rather the most homogenetic team. Well done.>

Are they genetic homos? Too much information Sokrates, I don't care WHO they sleep with - they play good chess! AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Oh well..too much vodka, sorry..

Aug-17-14  Dr. Overlord: <Sokrates> You see, some good folks here think that Dr. Overlord stands for Doctor Overlord but in reality it stands for Drunk Overlord...OK, point made..
Aug-17-14  schweigzwang: Oh, that way many more of us can be Dr.'s!
Aug-18-14  M.Hassan: Where can we find the final standings for all the participating countries? Appreciate if posted.

Sokrates: <Dr. Overlord> LOL. I was too lazy to look the word up in my dictionary. It should have been homogeneous, of course. Lesson learnt! :-) Vodka, btw, is probably the only strong liquid, I practically never drink. I'm a cocktail enthusiast, but I only fancy vodka in a Bloody Mary. White rum and gin are my favourite basic mixers.
Aug-18-14  vkk: OK is anyone having this issue?

im looking at any GMs page, and trying to click on an opening that they play and its not letting me look at their games?
