jnpope: <und Ehrenpreis des Budapester Schach-Club>

Would that be an honorary membership to the Budapest Chess Club or perhaps something else?

FSR: "Adolf" was a much more popular name in those days than it became after World War II. Go figure. Three of the 12 players in this tournament were Adolfs.

perfidious: <FSR>, ever hear of Daisy de Melker? Due to her actions, the forename Daisy went into the shades for a generation in South Africa.

FSR: <perfidious> I've encountered very few women and girls named "Daisy." I recall Daisy Buchanan in <The Great Gatsby>, and the movies <Driving Miss Daisy> and <Daisy Jones & the Six>. That pretty much exhausts my knowledge of the name. Until now.

I was surprised to see from the Social Security Administration's list of baby names that Daisy is on the upswing; it was the 110th most popular girl's name in the U.S. in 2023, which so far is the peak of its popularity. In 2023, 2412 girls in the U.S. (0.138%) were given the name Daisy. https://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/babynam... Much more popular these days than the likes of "Susan" and "Linda." Those were, after "Mary," the most popular girl's names in 1960, when I was born. Poor "Karen," which was the fourth most popular name in 1960, peaked at No. 3 in 1965, and was still No. 100 in 1986, is not in the top 1000 anymore, for obvious reasons.

I had never heard of Daisy de Melker. No doubt she was much better known in South Africa in 1932 than she was in the U.S. during our lifetimes.
