Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-05-18  Marmot PFL: Halfway through and the Russians (Karjakin, Andreikin, Kramnik, Grischuk, Dubov and Nepomniatchi) are staging an awesome display of blitz power, leaving Anand, Nakamura, Mamedyarov and the rest struggling to catch up.
Mar-05-18  Marmot PFL: Maybe only Carlsen could beat Karjakin in a blitz match.
Mar-05-18  Marmot PFL: Kramnik was upset about losing on time to Nakamura, but it seems by then he was losing the game anyway.
Mar-05-18  Marmot PFL: Karjakin missed win vs Mamedyarov so Naka is half a point back with 3 to go.
Mar-05-18  Marmot PFL: Karjakin beats Gelfand in 25 moves, wins it with a round to go.
Mar-05-18  siamesedream: Congrats to <GM Sergey Karkakin?>!
Mar-05-18  CountryGirl: Karjakin has worked on his blitz, having seen how it is often used as a tie breaker in important events. Well done, Sergey!
Mar-05-18  john barleycorn: <CountryGirl: Karjakin has worked on his blitz, ...>

Most definitely. But before the blitz the FIDE God put the rapid tie breaker.

Karjakin is my man to win the Candidates and give Carlsen a tough nut to crack again. Look how much better Anand played the second match with Carlsen. The mystery "Carlsen" might be resolved in the near future.

Mar-05-18  Reisswolf: Actually, Karjakin versus Carlsen would be an awesome blitz match. And an awesome classical match too, for that matter. I am rooting for Karjakin in the Candidates'.

It would have been very interesting if Karjakin had made it past Nakamura in the Speed Chess Championship. He was just a bit off his best form that day, and Nakamura played very well.

Mar-06-18  DeepTrouble: <Maybe only Carlsen could beat Karjakin in a blitz match.>

Maybe? I'm pretty sure Carlsen would beat Karjakin in a blitz match.

You make it sound as if Karjakin is a stronger blitz player than Carlsen. Carlsen has without doubt demonstrated that he's the strongest blitz player (and if you're watching online tournaments, he's also shown to be superior in 1 0 bullet as well).

Nakamura beat Karjakin, and Carlsen crushed Nakamura in the last Chess.com blitz tournament. That in itself should give you some indication.

It's true that Karjakin is stronger in blitz than he used to be, but he's still not as strong as Nakamura or Carlsen.

And no, we don't want another Carlsen - Karjakin match. I'd much prefer to see Aronian vs Carlsen.

Naka is strong in online chess, but in OTB blitz I think Karjakin is at least his equal, if not stronger. Karjakin won the St. Louis blitz last summer and the blitz WC 2016 (placed second in 2017). Naka has a bronze in the WC as his best result. Now Magnus is another matter...

I would like to see it. But I am looking forward to all the potential match ups.

My preferences, in reverse order:

8. Caruana. I just think he is the least impressive of the candidates' field

7. Ding Liren. I don't know much about him, and I think Bu is a better match up, from the Chinese players

6. Grischuk. He isn't the strongest of all the contenders, so the match up isn't as exciting. Honestly, I prefer MVL over Grischuk to be in the Candidates, but Grischuk is worthy of it.

5. Mamedyarov

4. Kramnik. Interesting just to see how he would perform, 18 years after his first WC title.

3. Karjakin. It was exciting and entertaining the last time, so why not?

2. So. I love Wesley's style of chess - it is highly creative. I think he is the most imaginative player in the world right now.

1. Aronian. A super-solid player who is also a great sportsman.

Let me give my opinion to your ranking:

<8. Caruana ...> No charisma, but definitely the best prepared player in the field. Never ever he will end up last.

<7. Ding Liren> hard to assess, but no chance for him to end up in the upper 50%, imo.

<6. Grischuk> lacking consistency. winning in great style sometimes but gambling it away the rest of the time.

<5. Mamedyarov> no comment. He is in the candidates, will entertain us with exciting games once in a while but that is not enough. not even for a #5 result.

<4. Kramnik> realistically, the wild card given to him is his last chance to write history again. either top or flop. who knows?

<3. Karjakin> was doing well last time. I expect Karjakin 2.0 doing extremely well. My favourite.

<2. So> So, what? The guy has sacrificed so much for being there, but he cannot handle pressure and when opposed to a novelty in the game he immediately switches to draw mode.

<1. Aronian> yes, he is amazingly creative, has a beautiful wife like I have, is a great guy and I wish him the best. Just worried about his stamina and being focussed on the result.

Hi <jbc>

Let me be clear - this was not a prediction of order of finishing!

No, this is my rank of the potential match ups with Carlsen, in reverse order of how interesting I think the match up is

Apr-25-18  pawnpro: i still think naka can beat carlsen...he just has to forget about that chick
May-02-18  extremepleasure2: Karjakin an Grischuk are both equally good with Carlsen in blitz. There isn't much difference between Karjakin and Grischuk but the latter has more chances to beat Carlsen

May-02-18  extremepleasure2: Rogge,

Mine is of course an expert opinion. Yours on the other hand is pure mathematical statistics which doesn't say much with respect to blitz as the standings of this tournament too clearly suggest.
