May-01-18  BOSTER: < Dionysius1> <Glad we agree>. Thanks. This tour has many "puzzles".It is not easy understand how Onischuk lost the ending with R and B vs R and N. Or why he didn't sac the knight after 23...f6 for 3 pawns to open black king playing 24.Qxh6.
May-01-18  BOSTER: <Dionysius1 >><Gorvits>.Really this is my mistake. Two bishops working in tandem on adjacent diagonals are known as <Horwitz>.
May-01-18  Jambow: <Write an article for you local paper (or these days website). There was no chess in the Edinburgh Evening News.>

Good advice actually perhaps I need to get busy... Grammerly here I come ;0]

This looks like a case of a fairly common mishap: Russian language does not use 'h' and maps foreign 'h' into 'g'. Thus, for instance, Georg Hegel can easily become Georg Gegel if translated into Russian and then out again.

  Dionysius1: Thanks <BOSTER>, <Gypsy>. I hadn't heard of Horwitz bishops.
May-02-18  Lupara: In his book My System, Nimzowitsch refers to two bishops on adjacent diagonals aimed at the enemy castled position as "Horwitz Bishops."

You wouldn't know how many people misname Harry Kasparov.

May-02-18  BOSTER: Julio Becerras has written an article where <Janowski Bishops> show tactical brilliance.
May-02-18  Pedro Fernandez: <<Lupara>: In his book My System, Nimzowitsch refers to two bishops on adjacent diagonals aimed at the enemy castled position as "Horwitz Bishops."> Yeah , "Horwitz Bishops exerts certain pressure over king castling, and in some cases such a formation could be dangerous. For beginners, I leave a couple of examples (aiming the black king, of course):

May-03-18  BOSTER: Famous game Rotlewi vs Rubinstein ,1907 shows how Horwitz Bishops command the whole board. Maybe new computer era changed the beauty in chess. At least I didn't see it in US Champ.
May-03-18  Count Wedgemore: <BOSTER> Another great 'Horwitz Bishops Game' is Aronian vs Anand, 2013, which had many similarities with that famous Rothlewi-Rubinstein game.

2 great minds sorting it out. When will the 3rd one show up and mention "food, dogs in the streets ..."?

FSR: During an interview early on in the tournament, Shankland said that he thought that the way to win the championship ahead of the "Big Three" was to beat them, not to draw them and score better against the other players than they did. Ironically, the latter is exactly what he ended up doing. Of course it wouldn't have worked if Caruana hadn't gone nuts against Izoria.

Not a very helpful strategy for us, since you have to be able to beat the big three in the first place. Reminds me of: The way to get rich is to buy low, sell high!

Or the opposite, by Richard Branson: How to become a millionaire? Easy, start off as a billionaire and go into the aviation business.

May-12-18  Boomie: <Or, if they are so inclined, for "food, men ...">

And in hard times, men for food.

Sally Simpson: Gary Lane has noted that both 'Chess Life' and 'CHESS' have the same cover picture of Sam and Nazi but for some reason one of them has tampered with the background.

Has 'Chess Life' air brushed out a building or have 'CHESS' added one?

https://scontent.flhr4-2.fna.fbcdn....

Aug-08-18  morfishine: <Sally Simpson> These are actually two different pictures taken from slightly different angles. Nazi's right fist is cuffed in one while extended in the other. Other minor details reveal these are two separate pictures

Sally Simpson: I'm not too sure Morf.

If two different pics then they must have been taken within a second of each other.

Sam's hair and grin is unchanged.

Someone has been tampering.

Aug-08-18  morfishine: <Sally Simpson> Maybe they copy-pasted Sam into a different Nazi photo. Nazi's posture has changed

Why? who knows
