Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Jurmala (1985)

The 2nd Jurmala International Chess Tournament was played from August 29 (Round 1) to September 14 (Round 13), with days for adjourned games on September 2, 7, 13 and 15, and a rest day on September 8 (after Round 8). The venue was the Lielupe Science House of the Latvian SSR's Academy of Sciences at 3 Viking Street, Jurmala, a resort town near Riga, Latvia. Round 5 started on the day of Round 1 of the Karpov - Kasparov World Championship Match (1985) in Moscow. Six of the 14 players were living in Latvia, and the other eight had not played in Latvia before. Hungary was represented by its 1983 champion IM Tamas Utasi, Bulgaria by GM Ventzislav Inkiov, Denmark by IM Carsten Høi, the Philippines by IM Andronico Yap, and England by IM Daniel King. The Latvians were headed by Mikhail Tal, who brought the young talent Alexander Shabalov with him. GM Tal and GM Vladimir Tukmakov of Ukraine were the rating favorites, and USSR champion IM Mikhail Gurevich was also participating. The opening ceremony took place on August 28, on King's 22nd birthday. The conference hall of the House of Science was full, and the Chairman of the Latvian Chess Federation Kachep welcomed the audience. The arbiter Podnieks introduced the players and held the draw.

For Tal, the tournament was the penultimate test of strength before the Montpellier Candidates (1985), as he also found the time to go to Denmark for the Nimzowitsch Memorial in Naestved (1985). For this to happen, he had to play Round 12 (against Yap) and Round 13 (against Bagirov) at the middle of the tournament (September 7-8). According to Daniel King, "for much of the tournament Tal cruised along, not giving the chess his all; instead he was enjoying relaxing with his wife and young daughter." There was a beach, the air was good and the tourist season was over. He drew with the best ones and picked off the weakies. Then in Round 11 he met Høi, who had defeated Tukmakov and the eccentric IM Alvis Vitolinsh. Tal was "sitting on luggages and couldn't adjourn", and, according to King, "Høi didn't stand a chance. Tal was gunning for him." Tal left for Copenhagen with 9 points, and learned by calling home from Denmark that he had shared the first place with Gurevich, who drew his last two games.
