Chessgames.com Chess Event Description
Carlos Torre Memorial Open (2002)

The 9-round Swiss Open (Magistral) tournament of the 15th Carlos Torre Repetto Memorial took place at the Hotel El Conquistador in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, 13-21 December 2002. Rest day: 18 December. Most of the participants were rated above 2200. After six rounds the leading 16 players joined the Carlos Torre Memorial (2002) (Wimbledon) knockout tournament, from which the eighthfinal losers rejoined the Open tournament's Round 7 on 19 December. The total prize fund of the Open was 100,000 Mexican pesos, with the winner taking home MXN 18,000. Playing started at 5 pm (Rounds 1-2, 4-8) and 9 am (Rounds 3 and 9). Tournament director: Alejandro Preve. Due to health problems, the chief arbiter Enrique Zaragoza Martinez was replaced (at some point) by Serafin Chuit Perez.

Juan Carlos Gonzalez Zamora (who rejoined from the Wimbledon eighthfinal) won with 6.5/9. The Wimbledon quarterfinalists could not claim two prizes and are excluded from the standings table. In addition to the Open and Wimbledon, there were also other tournaments: México (U-2200), Yucatán (U-1900), Mérida (U-1700), Kukulcán (U-1500), Infantil Sub-12 and Infantil Sub-10.
