The Dortmund International Chess Tournament held from July 4th to July 15th, 1996 was a category XVIII event. Ten players competed in a round robin format, including (in order of ELO): Vladimir Kramnik (2765), Veselin Topalov (2750), Vishwanathan Anand (2735), Alexei Shirov (2685), Michael Adams (2685), Boris Gelfand (2665), Judit Polgar (2665), Peter Leko (2630), Robert Huebner (2595), and Eric Lobron (2585). Kramnik and Anand tied for first place with an impressive 7/9, a full point over the rest of the field. However, Kramnik was declared champion based on his better Sonneborn-Berger score.
