The Reggio Emilia Chess Tournament held in 1991 was a category XVIII event. Ten of the world's upcoming and best players, including the World Champion, competed in a round robin format. The participants were (in order of ELO): Garry Kasparov (2770), Vassily Ivanchuk (2735), Anatoli Karpov (2730), Valery Salov (2665), Alexander Beliavsky (2655), Boris Gelfand (2655), Viswanathan Anand (2650), Mikhail Gurevich (2630), Alexander Khalifman (2630), and Lev Polugaevsky (2630). Anand defeated the World Champion, Kasparov, going on to place first with 6/9. The final standings and crosstable are as follows:
