YOU CANNOT(!) GO FORWARD IF YOU CANNOT GO BACK!
Compiled by notyetagm
--*--

Pieces are <TRAPPED> surprisingly often when they make the mistake of going up the board when they are attacked.

If a piece is attacked but advances up the board to a new, more exposed square and it cannot go back to the square it was originally on because the enemy now controls that square, that piece may have no safe square to move to if it is attacked.

Now consider this last sentence in the context of the game Shaked vs Kasparov, 1997

If a piece (White d2-queen) is attacked (19 ... ♘e5-c4) but advances up the board anyway to a new, more exposed square (f4-square, 20 ♕d2-f4??) and it cannot go back to the square it was originally on (d2-square) because the enemy now controls that square (Black c4-knight), that piece (White f4-queen) may have no safe square to move to if it is attacked (20 ... ♗g7-e5!).

Position after 19 ... ♘e5-c4, attacking White d2-queen:

dunkenchess: Ya! Cheparinov upsets Jako. A very beautiful game. Rg1+!!!!!!

But I like Leko's 43 ... ♖a1-e1+! 0-1 better.

43 ... ♖a1-e1+! 0-1
