" You learned chess in an award-winning program at a high school in an affluent neighbourhood and studied under the tutelage of master teachers and coaches from Europe while I picked up the game from an old arthritic alcoholic who showed me some antiquated combinations at an outdoor table in a park. You've won awards and titles, that's very impressive and I say that without a trace of irony, sarcasm, or jealousy. However, you never bothered to ask about my achievements and it really bothered me but then I thought it doesn't matter because she's certain to find out the things I've done, even if she tried to avoid knowing or facing who I am or my importance it wouldn't matter because people talk. Does it sound like I have an inferiority complex? Yeah, I do, but it's childplay actually; without much discomfort I usually adopt and confront some kind of emotional crisis or trauma and milk all of the emotional pain, humiliation and insecurity I can out of it until profound insight and some kind of enlightenment and maybe a new work of art is the result, much how you yourself obsess at the chessboard until a breakthrough comes. That, in a word, is what I do for a living. Tonight I decided my favourite piece is the rook, there is no reason for that, and there never will be, I simply made a firm decision that the rook is my favourite and always will be, it was a completely arbitrary decision, perhaps down the road sometime I will come to understand why..."
