Five grandmasters and one international master were invited to participate in an international double round robin event at Bad Kissingen, West Germany in April of 1981. The participants were (in order of ELO): Viktor Korchnoi (2650), Gennady Sosonko (2595), Vlastimil Hort (2575), Yasser Seirawan (2555), Heinz Wirthensohn (2420), and Eric Lobron (2405). The average of the combined ratings of all the players qualified the tournament as a category XII event. Korchnoi completely dominated the event, finishing undefeated with eight wins out of ten games. The shared seconds, Seirawan and Hort, trailed by three points at the final. The final standings and crosstable are as follows:
