US Open 1907, Excelsior = 8th Western Champ.

<8th Western Championship Excelsior, Minnesota
August 19-27, 1907>

<"A strong field of twenty players started in the annual championship of the Western Chess Association, opened at the Hotel Sampson, Excelsior, Minn., on August 19....

"After a struggle of the most stubborn kind, the distinction of attaining first place and winning the Western Championship together with the Cornell Trophy, fell to E. Michelsen, a member of the Chicago Chess and Checker Club. The success of the new champion will be a surprise to most of those who have been closely identified with chess in the West, for none dreamed that a 'dark horse' of this caliber would put in an appearance to outdistance the veterans and favorites. The same may be said of J. Daniels, who figures in second place. Chicago has done herself very proud, capturing four of the five places. Schrader of St. Louis, Blake of Winnipeg, and Elliott of Minneapolis all made a fine showing, as had been expected, and practically the only disappointment was the failure of ex-championship Wolbrecht to defend his title. His actual score consisted of 8 wins, 4 losses, and a draw, the other games having been forfeited by him.

"Michelsen, the winner, is a young Dane, who has been in this country only a short time. He was rated a first-class player in Chicago, but his own clubmates opened their eyes when he began running things with a high hand at Excelsior....">

Thanks to <MissScarlett> for submitting the score of Elliott - Cross. However, the score in the source appears to be corrupt, as the ending makes very little sense. -----
