Endgame: Stalemate
Compiled by Penguincw
--*--

Stalemate is when it's one side's turn, but they have no legal moves AND the player is not in check. If that's so, then the position is stalemate. Stalemate mostly occurs in the endgame. It usually is the inferior side's (the side which is down material and/or has the weaker position) goal in the endgame. All games ending in stalemate are draws. In this collection, all the games rather end in stalemate or will be stalemate on the next move by force (if it's an only move or will result in material loss if not taken). Games are in order by year.

The following type of stalemate is not allowed:

In that position, if white decides to take the bishop, then the game will be allowed. However, if the players agree to a draw without any more pieces being captured, then it will be excluded.

Below are some diagrams of stalemate.
